Tommy resigns as leader of SSP
oh dear
or oh yeh... i dont know... this could be a good thing... the SSP is a weak party... they throw fmembership forms at anyone who goes near a protest and as a result their messages end up diluted |

was he as bright orange as usual? too many sunbeds sir...
na seriously though, i don't think this is a bad thing for the SSP, personally, despite having leanings which would tend to put me further left than Labour (probably in the cliched 'Old Labour' camp) i would love to sympathise with the SSP but have personally always seen them as a bit of a joke, and a wee bit removed from reality. maybe im too sceptical. but i think a new leader may give them a bit of a new lease of life. probably not though. im way to tired, probably posting shit now, sorry! |

tbh Ive been expecting this for a while (just reading all the gossip just now too)
for the SSP, like I say when it broke that Gail was preggers I expected him to resign then. Hes always said to her being convener means he has to be away a lot so this way he can concentrate on being a dad rather than a 24/7 politician, which he has been for 20odd years. As for the timing now: the convener role is elected every year and the closing date for contenders is a few days time I think(possibly saturday), so waiting til the birth means there would be an interim leader til the next conference. By resigning now it means everyone knows hes not going for the rols so leaves the field open to others instead of anyone who may want the role thinking "cant run against tommy" if anything, hopefully it will kill the medias idea that the ssp are a "one man band" even though theres been other msps for over a year... The SSP will hardly be competing any future elections unless their Members dig them out of the £200,000 debt they created as a result of the European Elections. If the SSP cannot handle their money sensibly, they'll not be a reliable choice for the average tax-paying punter on the street.

ah thought there was a thread on this before but there wasnt:
SSP debt -reported 100k, actual 100k + mortgage the new office was recently bought so once this is cleared it becomes an asset adn should not be included on the debt. The reason for the debt is an expansion in full timers, the money gap per month is being plugged and is expected to be breaking even by february and then going into starting to climb back from then. the debt is the "national debt", the regions and branches each have their own surplusses seperate from the shared pool. The money for the election campaigns is completely seperate and raised at the time of elections. i.e. money raised for general election campaigning will be used for that purpose and not affect the debt at all. for comparison it should be noted that 100-200k (whichever yo choose to believe to be true) is nothing compared to the tory/lab/lib dem debt who also get major backing to the tune of millions per year from massive companies and rich individuals. Parties like the SSP, greens and even the BNP are far far better at handling their cash than the largest parties, because they are used to relying on money only coming in from subs paying members and small donations/publications payments. |

Does this resignation mean the Socialists are now going to become some kind of credible party? Or attempt to, should I say... |

the post of convener which he held was one made up with no power to it at all purely because the media dont understand the concept of not having one leader.
this role is elected every year but due to having the highest media profile he has held it since the parties creation, as thats the point of the convener - to be the face/soundclip for the media the "leadership" of the party is a 19person excutive elected every year at conference. Even though i don't really agree with a lot of SSP policies, i had a lot of time and respect for him, so i'm not sure whether this would be a good thing. Imagine if Rosie Kane became leader. Jesus.
