Abortion and Election

I was just wondering what everyone's views were on the abortion debate being a political issue?
Do you think, as people have been saying, that this will end up as big an issue as it has been in the US?

It will never be AS big an issue as it is in the U.S. - you don't get many catholics demonstrating outside clinics chanting "murderer" in the UK. It would seem too many rednecks see catholicism as "the gang the government can't ban".

Its not an election issue as far as parties are concerned anyway, it could only be one for individual MPs. there is no whip on the issue and MPs get a free vote.

I dunno, in my experience, catholics are generally less hardcore with regards to their religion. Besides which, catholics aren't the only christian denomination that are opposed to abortion.

Totally.. perhaps I was being a bit too hard on the Catholics. From the stories I've heard it seems to be mostly Catholic groups that violently protest in the US. Especially with all that stem cell research stuff.

You'd think they'd just forgive aborters... isn't that the basis of Christianity?!

in the US its not so much the Catholics as the evangelical protestant right. Although they both do take part.

I think its more the YEC bible literalists who are the worst for this type of thing.

Yeah well... I'm not too well versed on all of the religios sects... it's just a load of bullshit.

If any one religion wants to be taken seriously then they have to accept the fact that there are lots of religions out there - and for more than one religion to co-exist then they must all be supportive of the fact that everyone has different beliefs.

If someone does something that catholics/evangelists/whoever don't like, that's their choice. Live and let live. (or "live and let kill the non-living" as the case may well be)

i'm a catholic, and i can tell you, catholics are the christians the least strict about their religion, apart from maybe a few old crazy ones. i agree with smallbob that it should be the woman's choice

What about Michael Howard wanting to change the laws on it?
I know this can be a pretty touchy subject, people debating just when is it as seen a real live person, but I have always been pretty interested in other peoples opinions on it.

I agree it is a womans right to choose, and I don't really agree with men being able to make changes to the laws of it, as it is a choice they would never have to make, but perhaps the date it can be carried out at is a bit late.

Saying 24 weeks doesn't sound much, but when you phrase it as 6 months it has a different affect.I believe that late abortions should only be carried out in extreme cases where there are medical reasons. But then that would start a whole other debate as to which grounds were ok, as there are lots of disabled people living very normal lives.

The only reason that abortion has came onto the agenda is due to the Conservatives needing to spice up their election campaign. Up to now their campaign has been lifeless so they choose to discuss a touchy subject for many people just to increase their media attention. Yes, getting an abortion at 24 weeks gone is obviously a late abortion but most are carried out long before this time and i believe its a womens choice not the government or religious institutions.

or if you dont want kids, get on the pill, make the guy wear a condom, wear a femmydom(

), get the implant things, get a coil inserted... don't use abortion as a means of contraception, especially when you're 6months gone.
