id cards, it gets better and better

"Cost of identity cards rises to £93

The estimated cost of buying a new national ID card has risen again to £93.

Home Office documents confirmed the previous best guess of £88 had not included VAT and other extras.

As the Identity Card Bill was republished after it fell at the end of the last Parliament, the average annual running cost for issuing the controversial cards alongside passports was put at £584 million.

The £93 charge would eventually be imposed on every British adult for their passport and a new "biometric" identity card carrying details such as their fingerprints.

Ministers claim the cards will help in the fight against terrorism, illegal working, illegal immigration, identity fraud and abuse of public services such as the NHS.

The scheme, which is opposed by civil liberties campaigners, will be phased in from 2007-08 when those applying for a new or renewed passport will also have to get an ID card.

Although the holding of cards will initially be voluntary, the Home Office hopes later to persuade Parliament to make them compulsory - possibly from as early as 2010.

A massive computer database - the National Identity Register - will be created by the Identity Cards Bill to store details held on the cards, so they can be securely cross-checked.

Each credit-card sized card will have a microchip capable of storing details such as fingerprints and other "biometric" data, such as an electronic scan of the dimensions of the face and the iris of the eye. Opponents fear this could later be expanded to include a wide range of personal data such as health records or even DNA.

The Home Office said citizens will be able to apply for a stand-alone ID card without a passport, but confirmed it will not be possible to apply for a passport without an ID card.

I've no problem with the concept of the National ID Card (in fact i think its a good idea) but i have to agree that £93 is way over the top. As your statement says, the card is voluntary in its initial stages and i can understand the government wanting to make some extra pennies whilst this is the case but I think that they should make the cards either free or cheaper as soon as they become compulsary.

their sums dont add up though, they claim these will magically eliminate benefit fraud which "ellegedly" costs 2billion a year. They then say that this scheme will cost 5billion so we need to pay. How obvious is it that if their claims are true they will pay for themselves in 2.5years. But then ID cards as a "solution" are as unworkable as the problems they will allegedly solve are made up.

£93 is extortionate, especially if its compulsary. People are wary enough of these things as it is and charging everyone this amount is un called for.

I'd be willing to have an ID card and as a concept i generally think its sound. Any problems of inconvenience etc would soon become habit and TBH i dont care if the government knows info about me. Its just another stat to them and has no REAL effects on me surely?

However i really dont like the idea of paying for this. How often will i need to renew? Also what ages will require them. To me one of the benefits is if its a standard ID card then it can stop underage problems (drink, smoking, censorship etc), so surely younger people should have them, but thats even MORE expense on the parents. Some families could be forking out £480 just cos the government wont fund its schemes.

Oh and if the Government is gonna save shit loads of money from the implementation of this, surely they can afford to implement it? Just not throw billions at wars for a few years

If you are against it you must have something to hide. You're most likely a terrorist, because everyone knows this will stop terrorism, because it will be illegal to plant a car bomb if you don't have an id card.

I agree that havin these id cards may stop or slow down fraud etc but i think that this could just be the start, once it becomes compulsory for the cards to be had by everyone what are they going to do next?
I can honestly see them going down the road of having swipe/scan your card everytime you go into shop/bar or whatever just because if the government know where everyone is it will make us safer or supposedly anyway but they dont seem to take in account peoples civil liberties

you'll pay for it anyway, because if you don't pay for it with your own money, it will be payed for by tax. it will do fuck all to stop underage drinking, because most underagers get someone older to buy it for them anyway. how many times have you heard something described as "impossible to pirate/defraud etc" playstation 1 discs, ps2 discs, dvds etc have all been described as "impossible to pirate" at some point, people find ways around it just for the challenge of it, so all they're really achieving in the end is making identity fraud a whole load easier, because someone will work out a way to copy them.

I can see the Pro's of an ID card, but at that fucking price!

And jesus, why do they have to add VAT to it, there is no need!

the government try and add vat to anything.
Even on the original band aid single, Thatcher tried to take tax for that even tho it was for charity.
For the governement if they add £5 worth of vat onto every card, thats over 250million theyll get to fuck about with
