Book analysing the war on terror, chomsky etc
I was at one of the G8Alternatives plenaries on Sunday entitled according to program:
Reclaim the Peoples Security - Civil Liberties and the Global Security State there were speakers from the ex president of the Muslim Association of Britain, CAMPACC (campaign against criminalising communities and statewatch/liberty I managed to get some copies of a book published by CAMPACC - details here A Permanent State of Terror? Published by CAMPACC in association with Index on Censorship If you were to believe the newspaper headlines the threat from terrorism is getting greater every day. Both police and politicians in the UK have even said that it is only a matter of time before the country is faced with a major attack. But is the threat a reality? Is it any more real than the WMD in Iraq? Is Al-Qaeda operating on our doorstep? Or does talking up such dangers serve some sinister political purpose? What are the real reasons for the suspension of civil liberties and the introduction of a “state of emergency”? Who benefits, apart, for example, from the intelligence services and arms manufacturers? It is clear that the distinction between legitimate protest and indiscriminate violence is now seriously blurred by current political discussions. Recent legislation like the Terrorism Act 2000 and the laws rushed through Parliament in the aftermath of 11 September have not only fostered a climate of fear but also criminalised minority communities, largely made up of asylum seekers and political refugees. CAMPACC has been trying to resist this for the last two years. A Permanent State of Terror, published by CAMPACC in association with Index on Censorship is both a record of the campaign so far and a serious attempt to analyse what is really happening. Contributors include: Noam Chomsky, John Pilger, Mark Thomas, Liz Fekete, Tony Benn, Gareth Peirce, Louise Christian, Liz Davies, Frances Webber, James Kelman, Harold Pinter, Conor Gearty and others. ------------------------- They are priced £4.50 (for 170 pages - 35 articles/essays) each with all cash going to CAMPACC. Contact me if interested. Just thought we havent had a discussion on the powers of the terrorism act for a while and given the chances of it being used (abused!) on Wednesday its a good chance to throw it out there and plug the book. |

Excellent, thatll be them all gone already then!!
I'll contact the group to pass on cash once youve got them off me and get some more ordered. Ive started reading it this morning and its pretty damn good. Lots of stuff about the Kurdish situation. Chomskys chapter is fantastic, pretty much same vein as his talk at Edinburgh. p.m. me with when you are free on Thurs onwards and mobile numbers or whatever The other two people I sold to are on UGS too so maybe it can be the first official book club thread! ![]() |

that said it seems more relevent than ever ![]() How about we wait a while (a week or so) to see what kind of political response there will be to the tragic events in London and have a discussion about the anti-terror laws, war on terror and proposed new policies if they are announced by then |

You do realise that for someone who deals in the value of 'truth' and hegemony, Chomskey has been widly criticised for presenting 'expert' quotes as gospel? His works have, in recent years, been removed from the core reading for many university course due to his unfounded, vauge and knee-jerk criticisms. Some may say just like Klien he is merely writing what the kids want to hear.
I don't want another copy. |
