The Christ Child will kill us all!
Okay, before I start, this is a serious discussion. I'm watching a BBC4 Documentary on "El Nino" (Which means Christ Child), the global weather syetem that causes floods, droughts, killer storms. They have managed to prove that most of the civilisations that have been wiped out have been killed by floods and things. It's kinda a scary world we live in, isn't it!!!

El Nino translates as "The child", so I assume it's just called that for short. I always assumed it was a reference to a child having a tantrum.
I can't really say I'm too worried about this though, they're always making documentaries about how we're all going to die, and why we should be in a constant panic. It gets ratings. |

Directly translated, it is a referal to the fact that it always seemed to kick in at christmas time around Peru.
Civilisations have been wiped before, but only in ones and twos, thankfully we have the pleasure of living in a globalised society. We are so much bigger than a weather system. *strokes humanity* so purdy. |

There's a great Henry Rollins rant about it on "Think Tank". He has a problem with the name translating as "The Child" and thinks it should be renamed "The Motherfucker" or "The First Four Black Sabbath Albums".

There's no point in worrying about these things. People have always had fears of the end of the world/civilization, and worrying about it won't change anything.
It used to be nuclear war and they had public information broadcasts about how to survive, like hiding under the table with a blanket over it with your tins of food and water, or an alien invasion or the third world war. Centuries ago folk used to worry that the sky would fall on their heads! Who knows what will happen so what's the point in worrying about different scenarios? |

True, if the weather is going to be catastrophic and kill all of humanity then I don't suppose there is much point in worrying about it.
Although I don't reckon in the for-see-able(sp?!) future there can be too much that can go wrong, it takes the Earth a long time to "conjure" up anything globally destructive. However if you are meaning floods, hurricanes etc. Then yeah back in the day (when civilizations were getting wiped out) there weren't so many of us around, so i'd think the death toll would seem much higher. Maybe its just me rambling on mind. |
