Unrest in France

France has seen a lot of civil unrest in recent months and now it is the turn of students. Anybody seen much of this on the news? It's all about a new law that has been passed to make it easier to hire and fire young workers and the students have issues with this. There have been reports of scirmishes between protestors and the police, unions have put turnout at around 1.5million where the police say that around 500,000 attended various protests around the country.

thats pretty bang on for a million then (always double the police figures and half organisers figures to get a real turn out for a march).

This law is absolutely appalling and has enraged people the same way the Criminal Justice Act did here a few years back.

aye, i'll be honest, I can't see why there aren't MORE people on the streets.

"Workers under 26 can be sacked within 2 years of the start of their employment for no reason and with no prior warning"

Didn't anyone in the French Government have a look over the draft of that and think "hmm, might have a bit o' a problem with sneakin' that through"? It is being touted as the solution to get more young people working, but I can't see that one ever getting off the ground.

What the hell? Unless I'm missing something, this law is absolutely ridiculous.

I can't agree with violent protests, but any other kind of protesting is fine with me

This is a draconian law, rather like the one that's trying to be pushed through in France, pinpointing future criminals in primary schools. More information here http://news.scotsman.com/index.cfm?id=310322006
I don't think this is off-topic as it all contributes to the unrest in France just now, and no wonder, I would be protesting against this type of government too.
