clamping down on drinkers!

just saw on north tonight (or whatever itv's scottish news programme is called) -

only heard bits of it but it looks like since theyve implented the smoking ban, they now want to clamp down on alcohol.

it mentioned putting the drinking age up to 21 and only allowing people to have 4 drinks in each bar.

so, in other words everyone will be forced to go on pup crawls..

Sounds good to me. lol. I don't think they really think these things through carefully enough before pressing for laws like these to be implemented, in saying that though the smoking ban seems to have been a resounding success across Scotland.

yeah but the underagers get their alcohol, whats going to stop them from doing the same once the age limit is taken up to 21? They must still have a source that provides them with the alcohol in the first place.

I think the main target this initiative is aiming for is the binge drinking in city centers and to reduce the amount of public disorder.

Making everyone move bars every 4 drinks is going to make public disorder worse. Groups of people wandering around town every hour or so, constant obviously cause not everyone drinks at the same pace, is going to cause way more fights I think.

This idea is ridiculous. How can you be an adult, and yet not allowed to decide what you can put in your own body?

It's already ridiculous enough that someone can be considered old enough to get married, or join the army, but not old enough to decide what substances they put in their own bodies.

Also, as people say, forcing people to only have 4 drinks per bar isn't really going to stop binge drinking, and it's not really enforcable, people will just go elsewhere. Also, what if you buy someone else a drink, does that count? How will they stop people buying other people drinks?

?

never thought of it like that, but the whole thing seems silly when you put it like that.

you can join the army and possibly risk your life and die before being able to legally have a jack and coke?

...............

Also, if you limit the number of drinks people can have in one pub, then people will just get hammered before they go out, the same way a most people do when they're low on cash. It will solve nothing.

It is pretty ridiculous. At 16, you're old enough to see your buddy have his legs blown off in Iraq, but you're not old enough to watch films like Saw, as they're too violent.

Also, you're not old enough to watch that X-rated porn, but you're old enough to legally have sex....

Makes total sense

I wonder how they'll work it on band nights or comedy nights? I don't want to sound like an alky (even tho i am) but i don't wanna be limited to 4 pints on a night that has just as many bands and i'm with my mates before and after the bands.

raising the drinking age will almost eradicate binge drinking but it will also eradicate one of the few good pasttimes of the student. since there are several million students in the uk between 18 and 21 and i reckon most like the occasional drink and drink very responsibly, it's the dozey chav bitches and their ned lads who get hammered after a few aftershocks and start fighting people 4 times their age.

if the government really wanted to solve this they would put more police on the streets and have it that cops regularly enter pubs and ask the manager/head barman if everything's fine, etc. i've only ever seen 1 cop in a pub/club and that was because they were called for a drug offence.

you could easily pay for a higher police budget from the money the NHS would save for the ammount of calls they get on friday/saturday nights to fight victims, alcohol poisoning etc. i don't think the government has a clue, in the scale of 18 - 21 year olds that cause trouble even the majority of neds are responsible, they're just punishing the masses to cut out the few.
