Bush uses Presidential veto to block stem cell research funding

President Bush has used his veto to stop a bill which would have allowed federal funding of stem cell research, despite the bill being approved by Congress and having the support of most Americans according to polls.

"It crosses a moral boundary that our decent society needs to respect, so I vetoed it," he said on Wednesday. Source: BBC

This will no doubt please the Bible-belt who, like the President himself, believe he is on a mission from God. It also goes someway to showing that all Americans are not "dumb-asses" who blindly follow their President. I suspect the many of the good citizens of the USA are quite embarrassed by their crusading cowboy commander-in-chief.

I'm so glad our political system doesn't allow the Prime Minister to take decisions such as these on some sort of personal "moral" grounds, flying in the face of public opinion. Or wait, he does doesn't he?

Well at least President Bush is a straight talking guy. He believes deeply in the sanctity of life and does not sway from this point of view. Whether or not you believe in what he says, only an idiot would think that this move constitutes a desperate political gamble. The President truly believes that every life is sacred from conception to death.

Quote:
In the week before [Karla Faye Tucker's] execution, Bush says, Bianca Jagger and a number of other protesters came to Austin to demand clemency for Tucker. "Did you meet with any of them?" I ask.

Bush whips around and stares at me. "No, I didn't meet with any of them," he snaps, as though I've just asked the dumbest, most offensive question ever posed. "I didn't meet with Larry King either when he came down for it. I watched his interview with [Tucker], though. He asked her real difficult questions, like 'What would you say to Governor Bush?' "

"What was her answer?" I wonder.

"Please," Bush whimpers, his lips pursed in mock desperation, "don't kill me."

I don't think Bush is straight-talking by any stretch of the imagination. His jibberish is now the stuff of legend.

I guess that's the risk of having a President with vetoeing powers. He or she can impose a religiously-guided policy on millions of people who don't share those beliefs.

Incidentally, I don't think this is a gamble at all as he is in his last term anyway. He certainly doesn't think so. He's not going to be impeached over something like this.

He'll be rewarded in heaven and will sit alongside Tony basking in the self-righteous glory afforded to this position.

i shoulda maybe added the [/snark] tags.

Political gamble in terms of the upcoming midterm elections in November. Just because Bush's term is coming to the end doesn't mean the batshit crazy cabal that he is a part of doesn't want to hold onto power. But I don't think this will work as well as the Gay Marriage Amendment trick in 2004 so hopefully the Democrats can turn this into political ammunition
