Outrage at Pope's Comments on Islam

You've probably heard about all the commotion caused by the Pope's recent comments at a lecture he held in Germany... The Vatican has been quick to come out and say that no offence was meant by the comments and that the comments had been taken out of context. I wonder how many of those people lighting fires and chanting 'Death to America, Death to Israel' have actually read the lecture given by Pope Benedict XVI (pdf) and read those comments in the context they were meant.

It's basically gotten well out of hand. Take a look at what this Turkish lawmaker had to say about the new Pope.

Is it being taken the wrong way or are those Muslims right to protest the way they have?

I dont know why they care so much, seems like just an excuse to burn things. Its just one mans opinion anyway. Just like theres bound to be some muslim extremists somewhere slagging off Catholics on video broadcasts everyday. Catholics just dont care.

Its a bit mad considering the catholic church is on its arse anyway.

I said exatclly the same thing yesterday as i watched the news. i sat laughing infact when i seen it because it was blatantly obvious that would be there next step. it damn near always is when someone offends them but to do it in a situation where someone is calling you religion violent and burning things down in protest...great way to prove em wrong!!

Al-Qaida in Iraq warned Pope Benedict XVI on Monday that its war against Christianity and the West will go on until Islam takes over the world, and Iran's supreme leader called for more protests over the pontiff's remarks on Islam.
more here...

It's like the cartoon protests all over again.

It's not Islam taking over the world, its extremist versions of the religion and the method which that goal is being aimed for that is worrying.

When you hear Islamic extremists going on about how they want to force their religion on the entire world, I wonder how anyone can possibly justify the whole "Iran should be allowed to have nuclear weapons because other countries have it" argument.

Other than the whole justification that is.

aye, i appreciate that, i was just lifting from what the 'supreme leader' said.

It shows a huge gulf in attitudes, i mean you can argue that religion doesnt have as much power, if you will, in the 'west' as it does in the middle east. It goes back to that old 'religion is the cause of all evil/not its not' argument.

What worries me is that this is something that we might just have to get used to.
