Puff Puff - Over 18's only now

Well the big story is that the government are implementing new smoking laws which mean you have to be 18 or over to buy cigarettes. Thankfully I don't smoke but there is quite a lot of legislation happening with smoking now, does anyone have any views or ideas what will happen next with smoking? Bear in mind the NHS are wanting to refuse treatment to some cases if people smoke.

Or do you think the next big crackdown will be on alcohol?

is this happening in scotland too? I saw something at the end of november about the executive backing up some report which said the age should be raised to 18, but have only seen news about it actually happening in england and wales so far.

i think it's a great idea. to be honest I think they should be banned altogether, but it's not going to happen.

i don't smoke, and i'm not overy fussed about the legal age although i'm glad it's been raised (mainly to see the wee 13/14 year old fannies suffer) but i totally aree with the NHS bit, if they don't give a fuck about what they're doing to themselves then why should the NHS

word

there's always the arguement that smokers pay alot into the government fund which includes the NHS.

Sounds good to me. Alough, it just means anyone 18-24 had better carry ID everywhere otherwise they'll have nothing but hassle in certain shops like Tesco and other big chain shops.

Speaking of ebing Id'd. Tried to buy some Christmas Minitures for my girlfriends parents for chritsmas and i got knocked back because i had no ID.
I just had to laugh. Woulda looked like a bigger tit protesting it. Bearing in mind i was also buying alot of other random chritsmas stuff too.

life eh?

The BBC news report said England and Wales only however the government will probably implement it in Scotland eventually. I think it is a good idea, I started smoking when I was 16 and if I wasnt able to buy cigarettes when I was 16 I probably wouldnt have smoked as so many of my friends wouldnt be smoking as well. By the age of 18 I would have been less likely to start as I wasnt as impressionable in comparision to when I was 16.

personally i dont think it will matter because i started smoking when i was 13 i just bought fags from the old woman round the corner, if they want us to stop smoking then they should just ban it outright but big ol' gordon brown wont let them because it'd fucking cripple the nhs which is in a bad enough state allready.

Tax from cigarettes covers 45% of the nhs and more money is spent on treating hiv/aids than smoking related illnesses unless you believe all the shit about smoking supposedly causing every type of cancer as opposed to just mouth, lung and throat. made all the more tragic that some people cant get cancer treatments because of funding shortages when heroin addicts are getting heroin on the nhs now that theyve found that buying heroin is cheaper than methadone.

in any society it would be wrong to discriminate a minority of 30% by limiting what they could do and where especially since they put more into the public kitty than anyone else.

well rant over.

kinda went by the wayside there but i felt like it.

if the age is taken up there will be a 12-18month changeover time so people who are 16 aren't legal one day then illegal the next.

confusion within the law much?

i can't wait for this to really kick off

great idea this

the problem is a lot of 14 / 15 year olds get away with looking 16. and at 14, most kids are fucking idiots and will try smoking stupidly.

if the legal age is 18, i dont think anyone under 16 (or in some cases 17) will get away with buying fags. and by that age, your not such a tool.

true, if the age was 18 i don't think i'd ever have started. thankfully i'd consider myself a successful ex-smoker but i really coulda done without that in my life.

I guess that goes the same for people who self-harm, suicide attempts, alcoholics, drug users and such too?
I'm a bit indifferent on it all, but as said above, smokers do contribute quite a bit more to the government, NHS most importantly, than non-smokers, so you could argue that they are kinda paying for themselves to be treated through the purchase of cigarettes.

I don't smoke, so couldn't really care much about the age limit. But if it's implemented in Scotland, it could result in more wee gadges asking me to buy them fags, so that could be kinda amusing. Although it would be nice if the age limit incr
