The best thing is I can justify this in the religious way; when you query how this could be possible, I'll just say "because it is" or "because I believe it to be true" or even "because you can't categorically prove that it isn't possible".

I mean if you have to pay some humans next to nothing to do menial, repetitive tasks, you still have pay them something. Better to figure out a way to get machines to do it efficiently and reliably then just install it and pay it nothing. Then we just need infinite free energy; we could get Steorn (lollo) to provide us with that. Then everything is cool, we live like Iain M. Banks Culture and no more religion.
It's cool

Ok, but a society like that may still have people within it who are religious. Money and comfort are not necessarily tools which will eradicate religion amongst humans, I mean, are you suggesting the pineal gland is sliced out of everyone's brains at birth? Or that it will evolve out of the species altogether?

The early church managed to turn this to profit. 'The meek shall inherit the earth'....way to keep the impoverished masses in their place eh? 'Don't worry about your life being shit now! You'll go to heaven if you don't complain!'

Oh dear LORD! Are you one of those people who thinks that the 'soul' lives in the pineal? Or are you proposing that New Age bullshit about chakras is anything other than craporama?

I agree. I don't like organised religion, but can't see it just disppearing from the human race. It has always been a part of our species, and fits an evolutionary need, which I doubt consumerism can fill.
Many people's views don't remain static throughout their lives too.

Right I have had enough of your crap you fucking whining nob cheese permanently stuck up your own arse (this is merely an accumulated insult which still doesn't outweigh what this git has said to me).

NO!! It has been proven scientifically that when people have religious type experiences it is found to be active.

If a mod wants me to, I will star/bleep out the long-called for retaliation insults

this thread has started coming apart at the seams now, i'd like to take it back a little into the realms of "why thinking that being an atheist makes you superior to non-atheists makes you a total cunt"

I have no problem with atheists, i share the same contempt for organised religion as most atheists do. In fact i have no problem with anyone's view as long as they don't have a superiority complex about them and/or find it necessary to try and force them upon others.

My view of the universe is based on things i have seen, felt and experienced, not in blind faith. i really couldn't give a shit whether any of these things can be replicated and observed in a laboratory environment, of course they fucking can't, they are deeply personal internal experiences. just because you haven't felt them, or perhaps just ignored or discounted them when you did feel them, does not mean they are not real.

Alex, if you share the same attitude towards love as you do towards spirituality, then i expect you do and always will live a very lonely and sad existence. Can love be replicated and observed in a laboratory? No. does that mean it is not real?

What does this mean? If I take enough acid does that qualify? How has it been proven? What does this proof actually mean/suggest/infer?

I'm genuinely curious. We've established wikilinks are cool for base level introductions to things that could be considered specialist knowledge so hit me up some links.

I'd rather it didn't because this is an ok thread and what you're proposing is silly and a strawman argument, and I prefer a lively debate to a mudsling.

I certainly will do if I can find any. I know links are so much better but most of what I know has accumulated from books and programmes. But I will try!

Edit, this is Kate back but forgot Sik was logged in doh

Oh, I'm sorry, asking you if you were high when you were repeatedly failing to grasp a concept even my 5 year old niece could understand was probably a little insensitive. It's probably medicinal marijuana isn't it?

State your source. I am aware of only one test where the drug a mexican psychiatris thought MIGHT be produced in the pineal, dimethyltryptamine, was given to test subjects, some of whom reported 'religious' style experiences. This was NOT caused by the pineal.

Then you 'expect' wrongly. What on earth has love got to do with spirituality?

As for my 'lonely and sad existence' I'll be sure to check for that with my children and my girlfriend, they'll no doubt be able to tell me how 'lonely and sad' I am.
