I was reading recently that Stephen Hawking isn't actually considered that great a physicist by his peers. I mean, they don't say he's shit, just that he's not particularly special and there are many, many better physicists. His renown is more to do with his media-friendly appearance and the fact that he wrote a particularly famous pop-science book ("Brief History.....").

So, to simplify, everything that exists could be classed as 'god', and 'god' doesn't need to actually exist as a conscious entity, and may not have made the universe at all because 'he' IS the universe.

Alex, that sounds very much like Spinoza's concept of God. He talks about God as basically being substance that makes up everything and is also the cause of everything. It's all very overly complicated if you go into any depth but that's the basic jist of it.

I think he's dead famous cos he's in a wheelchair and any minority group sells well. It looks good for the publishers too.
