Wow!

Quite an eye-opener.

My atheism isn't something I have ever given much thought to. I just always accepted that I wasn't religious and some people were. I guess I've never really had the need to think about it because religion has never had an obvious effect on my personal life.

This Dispatches programme has strengthened recent thoughts I've been having about becoming a more vocal atheist. I've only ever encountered one fundamentalist christian in my life and always just pitied her as a little deluded but no harm to anyone. I never really thought about the negative influence religion is having politically in this country and that people like her are providing a loyal fan base for it. I wasn't dumb enough to assume that everyone in UK parliament was entirely secular, of course, but this kind of christian lobbying always seemed very American and suitably mocked. The influence of the ignorant displayed during this show was really quite shocking and anything but amusing.

Watched this too and like the warning said, I was offended.

The woman who asked the camera to be turned off after being presented with the 'how old is the Earth question' was a high point.

The high point for me, as comic light relief anyway, was the guy who had 'Jesus' written on a bit of paper above his bed to stop him having a wank in the morning!

Tit!

The chap predicting civil war with Islam in the next twenty years turned my stomach though. He almost looked as if he was relishing the prospect.

Yeah, I was like this for a long time. I had a live, and let live outlook towards my atheism. But the more I see religious people trying to legislate their beliefs, either through the ballot box, or through the use of violence, the more I feel that I can't stay silent about it.

Yeah, that was good. Any questions she clearly couldn't answer, she just turned off the mic!

I switched it on at the bit about the school, and the teacher was saying that before Jesus, everyone was a sinner, and sinners get turned into pillars of salt. How can the government justify faith schools in any way if this is potentially the kind of crap that will get taught.

I was also extremely concerned by the way that that lawyer wifie was so easily able to get to Lord Tebbit and that torie MP.

Thank goodness that Channel 4 is able to show these programs, because I didn't realise how Americanised the fundamentalist cause in the UK had become.
