I think faith schools are pretty ridiculous (and I say this as someone that attended a faith school).

If your faith is so amazing, and the evidence is so convincing, then why do you need to send children to school to be brainwashed before they're old enough to developed bullshit detectors?

I don't see why faith schools should be any more acceptable than sending children to a "conservative" school, or a "labour" school, where children are taught a biased version of events, based on the views of a particular political ideology.

I wasn't brainwashed or educated on a biased version of events, in my opinion. In fact, having attended a faith based school I feel I had a better education of religion (all faiths included), it's background and it's relevance (or otherwise) in today's society compared to someone who attended a 'regular' school based on discussions since. I'm not saying I'm more knowledgeable now but I definitely had a better shot at it than others at the time.
We were definitely open to question the teacher when we weren't taking the piss and in 5th year, R.E. was pretty good.

Services or masses weren't even compulsory either as long as you weren't being a tadger and just wanted to bunk.

Primary school is a little bit different I guess but I'm pretty comfortable with what my education was.

Basically at secondary you get 2 periods of R.E. a week (which covers all faiths) and there's services for the major events in that faith's calendar.

At primary school you do things like your first communion and confirmation through the school (if you're at a catholic one) but this isn't compulsory at all and is completely up to the parents/child.

That's how it worked at mine anyway.
Oh and if you're at a Catholic one you'll need to find out about condoms somewhere else.

And you get sexually abused by priests... (this is a joke)

I'm sure I remember reading about a case in the US, not that long ago, where parents that had sent their kids to one of these fundie schools, were suing a university, because the university failed to recognise their qualifications.

Send your kid to be brainwashed if you want, but don't cry when it turns out that their "science" qualifications that taught them the earth is 6000 years old, and that evolution is a big conspiracy by the scientific community, are worth shit.

I went to a protestant school, and got taught fuck all about my own religion, spent most of the time being told how to be tolerant of other faiths.

Physics, Biology and all that were explained with proper science.

I remember being taught evolution in biology, and then discussing creationism in RE in the same day. Very confusing.

He makes a valid point - if the Bible is the infallible word of a Supreme Being then it takes a massive amount of arrogance to ignore ANY of it...even the stuff that's contradictory, preaching hate, or provably untrue.

As I've said elsewhere in this thread, the fundamentalists are the ONLY people following their religion 'correctly'....the others are accepting that big chunks of it are nonsense, it's as if they want to believe but know in their hearts that what the Bible says doesn't match up with the reality of the world around them.

The simple truth is this.....

If you want to follow the 'Word of God' then you HAVE to accept the WHOLE Bible (or Koran or whatever) as being true. That means you have to accept that -

• The Earth was created in a week around 6000 years ago.
• Dinosaurs never existed
• Homosexuality is a sin
• Sex before marriage is a sin
• To say 'Oh God' as an expletive is a sin
• Jews are the Chosen People
• A flood wiped out everyone on Earth, apart from Noah....and two of EVERY SINGLE ANIMAL ON THE PLANET.....who were all in a boat no bigger than a medium sized ferry
• Jesus will physically return to set up his Kingdom on Earth
• Masses of other bollocks

Actually, maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong here, I'm sure I read somewhere that the rules laid down in leviticus, were never intended to be followed by ordinary people, they were intended for the "Levites"?

That's not to say that there are no contradictions in the bible, of course.

But yeah, either way, anyone using Leviticus to justify any anti-homosexuality stance is a massive hypocrite, unless they also take similar stances on the eating of shellfish, the wearing of clothes made from different types of cloth, and the myriad of other amazingly fun things to be found in leviticus.
