Sainsburys, Newsnight on BBC 2 now
The dude from Sainsburys, what a fucking moron. Talking about how the government is using plastic bags as a scapegoat and forcing supermarkets to force change on the consumer. Damn right there should be a tax on plastic bags. They guy is completely forgetting the fact that people can use tote bags and even back packs to carry some of their shopping in. He's also talking about general supermarket packaging and some of his points are valid but his attitude on the camera is making me rage.

i am reading about this on the BBC website ...
"Bags consume a valuable raw material and they have an environmental impact in their manufacture, their transport, use and disposal. Yet increasingly the debate has become focused on only one dimension of that - the disposal of bags" well firstly , the resources are not 'that' valuable to make polyurethane. Yes they do have an environmental impact , particularly being within the chemicals industry. i had a look at a random polyurethane company and Welcome to Huntsman , proved quite good in the sense of striving towards a better environment - they have an active sustainability program : ISO 9001:2000,ISO 14001:2004 - these are both environmental standards certificates , usually done externally , but always ratified externally and particularly the latter one is to quite a high standard. With this in consideration .. and also the likliness that alot of these companies are at least becoming self sufficient power wise (depending on location) The transport is not going to take a huge portion , because once the bags are made they are likely to be sent to a distributor and then as i have experienced in a supermarket they come combined with other orders etc I am not going to tackle disposal because there is a problem , but its getting better, rather than taxing plastic bags they should put quotas on their supply, then i am sure the knock on will be to start charging for plastic bags like lidl do .. i think i have verged into waffle feel free to pick it apart .. i think its getting to late in the day for posts as long as mine. |

I don't what Sainsbury's policies are but I know Tesco have been trying to discourage the use of plastic bags. You get extra Clubcard points if you use your own bags to pack your shopping in. I'm sure there are some more policies but I can't remember them off the top of my head so will check tomorrow.

In Tesco, the checkout operator is meant to talk to the customer about using plastic bags etc... to encourage them to use re-usable ones.
I don't think there are any others. They had a huge advertising campaign about it as well. |

even if there was a charge on plastic bags, would anything change that dramatically?
i tend to use one bag for as much as possible, simply for carrying purposes rather than anything else |

i'll stick with Liddles bags. Near indestructable if you get the 9p ones and reuse 'em for all sorts of things(carrying gig equipment - wires, pedels etc, bin bags in a pinch, oh aye using them for grocery bags...).

Free plastic bags should just be banned.
People can re-use stronger bags, buy those 'bags for life' etc. It only costs a couple of quick to acquire enough bags for a family's weekly shop, and they are much much stronger. I happen to think Austria/Germany are very good comparisons with the UK, as both charge for plastic bags, and both countries have excellent reputations for recycling within the home. Britain is so far behind them in terms of environmental sustainability. |
