ID cards are compulsory in Europe
People aged over 16 in the UK may soon have to pay nearly £40 for a compulsory identity card, it is being reported.
In a leaked letter to Cabinet ministers Home Secretary David Blunkett said he believed the case for a "universal identity card in the UK" was overwhelming, according to the Sunday Times.

The cards would carry information identifying their owner - a fingerprint, for example, or a picture of their iris or other facial characteristics, the paper reports.

Individuals would not have to carry the card at all times but would have produce it within a few days if asked to do so by police, the document says.

The letter dated 25 June was officially addressed to Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott, as chairman of the domestic affairs cabinet committee, said the paper.

It quotes Mr Blunkett as saying "a highly organised minority" would "campaign vocally" against the cards but that he believed the argument that ID cards would inhibit freedom was "wrong."

"We are strengthened in our liberty if our identity is protected from theft; if we are able to access the services we are entitled to; and if our community is better protected from terrorists and organised criminals," he wrote.

A total of 11 European Union member states already have identity cards.

In the letter Mr Blunkett reportedly said he had already discussed the cost of the scheme with the Treasury.

The cards would be free for people on low incomes or receiving benefits, for 16-year-olds and retired people above the age of 75.

The rest of the population would pay £39 if the free and discounted cards were paid for out of taxation.

why don't they just put electronic tags in us at birth so they can track us with gps and administer electric shocks if they think we're up to something or if they're bored on the nightshift or whatever.

im fed up of all the shit we have to pay for, call me tight but im sick of having to pay coucil tax n shit likes that for the scum of society to sit on their arses and claim off the social, so the hard workin fowk likes me have to go and fork out more money, i bet all of the fukin asylum seeking scrounging fuks get them for free, and all the ned bastards who claim off the social get them for free too, and i bet the "cost" of these cards runs at about £1.99 from your local corner shop but the government decided ahhh£40 is fair that should line our pockets for a nice weee wage increase at the end of the year lets charge joe public that!

i was out wi me dad the other day and there had been a wee car crash(nothing major everyone was ok) and the 2 police cars in attendance were BMW's, yet again more of our money poured into areas that there is no real logical need for...........i mean why couldnt the police have saved like £30k and just bought a couple of fords, of put 2 more police persons on the street for the same cost!!!!!!

i rest my case!

what "scrounging", people claiming asylum cannot get jobs legally here for 6months, They have no option but to go on benefits. Ask yer dad aboot that one. Plus they get less benefits ££ than UK citizens on the dole, with vouchers to get food (you spend over voucher amount or no money back as change) and are given the shit housing that no one else wants. Scrounging asylum seekers are a figment of the Sun and Daily Mail. Tell that shit to the people fleeing Iraq and Afghanistan (2 of the top 3 places where our aslum seekers come from). Tell the Iraqi asylum seekers sent back because "Iraq has a just judicial system and they face a fair trial" that they are scroungers.
