What do you guys think?...
...About celebraties being able to get into positions of power due (mainly) to their fame?
Like Arnie, Larry Flint and the singer from TSOL (cannae mind his name) running for Governor of California and Jeses Ventura being the governor of Minnesota. Jesse's doing a pretty good job in Minnestota and these other guys might do a good job in Cali. But if they weren't famous they wouldn't stand a chance, I mean If Some Austrian Bobybuilder Shwartzenegger before he was famous )showed up in america and ran for office he'd get laughed right out of the country. |

it'll be like David and Goliath if these two were to come face to face in the governor elections in California. Its been labelled as a circus due to the media hype and the list of celebrities putting themselves forward as candidates. Could this ever happen in the UK? where a celebrity runs in an election solely based on the strength of their celebrity status? I cant think of any other place on the planet where something like this could happen, other than America. You even have a porn king in the running, Larry Flint!.

The TSOL singer is called Jack Grisham. I think in a way its a good thing that celebrities are taking up politics cos it makes people listen to them and if they have the right views then why not. I mean if they had the exact same views, would you rather vote for a 50 year old stiff in a suit or a 30 something yeard old who had been a hero to you or something? Its kinda unfair if it helps but at least it makes people listen and get into politics and help them realise whats right and wrong and to stand up for their rights etc... May i remind you that Arnie is a republican who are the american version of the Tories (maybe even the bnp) and that california is doing well as a liberal state and if it was taken over by the right then the shit would hit the fan so just because hes in terminator and talks funny doesnt mean that he is a good choice. Gary Coleman is really small and cute and im pretty certain hes a liberal so hes a good choice, not that it'll apply to anyone here

I don't see the problem with Arnold Schwarzenegger running for office. He's a self made man. He arrived in the USA with nothing, and managed to make himself rich through nothing more than hard work and determination, and this was before his film career. I am not really a fan of his, but that is something that I admire.
From what I've heard, California is in a shit state financially right now. Who better to sort things out than someone who knows the value of hard work? |

Sure the guy worked hard throughout his career fair enough, he stood around looking hard and blowing things up and couldnt get his words out properly, much like the current american president, the last thing america needs is another seedy right wing republican. im a HUGE terminator fan by the way ![]() |

i think there's not much difference between using your fame to get elected or using money. The latter is usually the only factor that actually determines the result in a lot of cases, especially in America. you gotta be able to afford an election campaign to get your ideas across, and that costs shitloads . wealth = power = fuckin shite
But on the other hand , it's not very democratic or just, to deny peeps the opportunity to get involved in politics because of a past profession or image. The uk has had some famous peeps elected too. Glenda Jackson, Seb Coe. i'm sure there are other examples but i can't think of any more. |

Arnie was minted before he ever became an actor, he got there through hard work and good buisiness sense. He manged to make a shitload of money through buying and selling property before he was famous, starting off with nothing. Someone with as much business sense as Arnie would probably be in a good position to sort out the financial problems in California. I personally think that dismissing him purely on the fact that he was in a lot of mindless films, or that he's already famous is just as stupid as voting for him purely on the basis that he is famous. I realise that you are not doing that, but a lot of people will. |
