I don't think you need a forum for this, more of a fact-page / website, with a list of promoters, places to play, equipment hire locations etc, a sub dection of UGS perhaps? I dont think you need a whole forum for it, since most questions could be answered in an FAQ.
And any bands wanting their gig promoted can use the gig anouncements forum we already have. ![]() Also you could have 1 sticky thread somewhere (gig anouncement section maybe?) *how to get your band promoted* or summin, and inside have a link to the site with all the info on it. Then anyone with any specific questions could ask in there. boah ~smack. Last edited by ~smack. : 4th January 2004 at 01:36 AM. |

I think its a valid idea in some respects, but rather than an open forum it should take the form of an FAQ or something like that. Have to think it through. The problem is there may be more than one promoter in each area and might lead to some sort of conflicts. Perhaps a forum with a thread for each promoter that outlines their prefered type of band that they put gigs on for or something like that.

I see where you're coming from but the thing is that there are so many bands looking for gigs at the moment that i'm sure one promoter won't be put out by another from the same area putting other bands on (i think it would be rare to see promoters 'competing' for local bands). As well as that, i'm sure there are very few local promoters that stick to a specific genre. For instance, Twisted Ape in Glasgow covers everything from shite indie to death metal

No Disrespect intended to the few really good promoters out there, but as every musician know, for every promoter that actually has the money to do any real promotion, has the know-how to do it and is prepared to do it for your band, there are at least 100 who don't have the money or even the faintest idea how to promote themselves never mind your band. Oh yeah and putting up a couple of tiny posters at the venue you're due to play at isn't promotion, all that does is tell you that you arrived at the right venue ! Some 'promoters' can't even get your Band name right, so what hope for promoting your band effectively !
The best promotion any unsigned band will ever get, is the promotion it does by itself for itself. At risk of being even more negative, providing a FAQ and all the other things you suggsted is a good idea, but it relies on the bands taking an interest to promote themselves and a lot of them don't. This is because, when it comes to 'music' most musicians disgard all sense reality and get involved in the big music business dream of 'being discovered' ( probably by aliens, certianly it's more likely than by a record co A&R man !) While in this 'dream' words like commercialism, marketing, promotion have no valid meaning. Musicians forget that the proper Music Business is all about Business not really about Music. |

Apart from the legal problems a black list would cause, it wouldn't work anyway, because, as every promoter knows, there's always another stupid band, following the great 'discover us dream' ready and willing to play for nothing, or even less, regardless of how badly they'll get treated ! One born every day as they say. |

indeed. Well he tried to fuck me over but i was having none of it. My lawyer said we could have finished him for good, and i was tempted but i thought it unfair to deprive bands of semi-high profile gigs - even if it was for a twat.

Well, my Dad is best friends with a highly respected dundee lawyer (always handy) so it didnt cost anything.
It wouldnt have been as simple as open and shut, however, he never replied to the solicitors letter, which i am told is an offense in itself. it was when he failed to respond i was told i could take him to the cleaners. Also i kept every single email he sent me, and apparently, in Scottish law, an email can be legally binding. |
