Should undergroundscene be for underground bands?
The fightstar thread in the gig section sparked this debate off and so it would probably be better if it was here.
Personally, i think at the very LEAST, bands on major labels should not be covered on ugs. Its very frustrating to see all the sticky posts taking up most of the front page of gig announcements let alone posts about coroprate rock bands. The second page gets no views and too often the underground stuff gets pushed down for this kind of crap. Major label bands get massive financial backing and media coverage, if they are to receive coverage here, where is the space for smaller bands. However, it isn't just about how many people like a band. For example, not many folk would argue dischord or hydrahead bands shouldn't be on here dcespite selling bucketloads of records. These labels conduct their business without mass media coverage or corporate sponsorship. This is not elitism either, it doesn't say anything about what people should think about bigger or corporate bands, it merely seeks to conserve this as a space for underground bands given the name of the site and the description on the front page. Discuss. |

I agree, but others really don't care about ethics when music is concerned. in my eyes, it's narrow minded, selfish, and a little childish not to care, but I've argued that point to the death and never gained an inch of ground with anyone.
it's the kind of suggestion that's difficult to police as well. this site has a lot of members who just don't care about underground music that much. |

yeah underground scene is for the underground scene. people on here have a right to talk about bands they like and discuss bigger or more mainstream gigs that they are going to. i think it's a bit exagerated to say that the underground stuff gets pushed aside all that gets pushed aside is the gigs people don't want to talk about. it's harsh if it's your gig and you see people more interested in fightstar but you can't force them to talk about your gig.

in an ideal world UGS would be dominated by underground music discussion. Unfortunately this isnt the case because a lot of people share an interest in both unsigned music as well as signed music , and to limit discussion to one of those would be unfair.
All i can suggest is trying your best to post as much about unsigned, underground acts as possible to try and attract discussion and other people who share the same view as yourself. With the recent launch of the gallery section, now is a good time to start trying to pull in this type of content. i'll be attending more local gigs, as many as i can with my camera in order to help facilitate this progression. The first version of this site focused entirely on underground music, had over 70 hand type band profiles and lots of pictures and links to unsigned bands, that was before the focus turned on community. When the forums were relatively young, we had a hardened following, its hard to get that back because the site has grown so much that as well as attracting people from the unsigned DIY side of things, its also bringing in people from the more commercial side of things. Its not a bad thing, but i agree the content of the site should bias toward unsigned bands. People also add their gigs to the forum, but never bother to add them to the gigs calander which ensure that their gig is displayed on the front page a week before the performance. Quote:

i go to more than my fair share of underground band gigs, ive supported and advertised this site for a couple of years,i pay the subscription and befriended many of the bands on this board and taken photos for a couple of them.if i want to start a thread about a gig im going to in the gig announcements section,be them signed or not then i feel i have that right to do so.

I agree that the whole point in UGS is that it should be for underground artists, bands, etc. However, it's still a forum and if we can have a "Ask a question to the next poster" thread then it's only fair that we have Fightstar threads.
As long as there are no sticky threads and no forum hosting for the bigger bands then I reckon all else is cool. Na'am sayin'?! |

But how do you define signed, to a label or to a major label. This type of thing can cause far to many arguments as people get all elitest saying a band was way betetr 6 years ago and now they supported a band on sony so cant be talked about.
The main priority should be getting the majority of UGS posts about music then we can extend more energy after that trying to focus on underground music |
