Sony also confirmed back-catalogue compatibility with PSone and PS2 titles, which will benefit from PS3's high-definition display capabilities.

Please note that at the present time there is absolutely no official information on the design of the console or its controller, the exact European release date, the pricing or the launch software line-up.
I think that's probably good news - bad if you're in Japan, but probably better for us in the UK. I've had one pre-ordered for a while so I should probably get one on release. Fingers crossed.

There's quite a lot of links to stuff from the wikipedia page but I recon we'll see a lot of stuff come out about PS3 games at this year's E3 in May.

The fact that they're rendering the explosion volumetrically is pretty cool. The fact that the demo isn't really doing much, other than physics and rendering, isn't so impressive.

It's one thing to do a really impressive explosion like that when it's just a tech-demo. When you've got shitloads of characters going around, game-logic, and multiple explosions, then it's a bit more impressive.

If they can make it look that cool (or cooler) in the final game, I'll be impressed.

I don't know much about how all this works but isn't that doing a lot more than the processor would be doing on it's own in a real game? - i.e. wouldn't there be animations for a lot of things and other parts of the system doing other calculations?

I guess we'll have to wait till November to see what real completed games look like. But as I said, probably more tech demos and stuff at E3

The explosion is probably a lot more detailed than it would be in the final game. It doesn't have a large environment, or any AI running around for example. All it's got to do is simulate the explosion, simulate the physics, and draw everything.

A tech demo usually doesn't really give you a good idea of what games on the console are going to look like, because it's a hell of a lot easier to get something looking really nice, when it's just a limited tech-demo, with not much going on other than what you're demonstrating, than in a full-on game, which is doing a hell of a lot more work.

Don't get me wrong though, I'm sure the games will look amazing.

I'm just asking though, He said that the whole thing was being drawn by the Cell, so isn't it just a demo of how powerful the cell is - calculating all the physics and drawing everything, when normally the Graphics card would do the drawing?

or have i missunderstood?

I don't know how the cell works, but if I've heard people say that on the PS2, a lot of the stuff that'd be handled by the graphics card on the PC was actually done on one of the processors. (so it was almost like writing a software engine in a way)

So either the PS3 is like this as well, or the actual rendering is being done on the graphics chip.

The cell would be calculating the volumetric explosion, not actually rendering it.
