Question XVid AVI files to PS3?

Ok, so I've got about a million XVid files that are .avi format and I want to watch them on my PS3 which supports MPEG-1, MPEG-2 (PS,TS), H.264/MEPG-4 AVC, MPEG-4 SP

Now I hardly know what any of this means because in the past I've always just installed the right codecs on the PC and hit play. I can't really do this on the PS3 (can't be bothered with jumping into linux on it yet as there's a good few issues).

So I need to know how to get these .avi files playable on the PS3 with as little quality loss as possible. and without spending a penny on software. If the best software for doing it only works in linux then that's not a problem. I don't have a Mac though.

FFDShow says the video codec is XVID(libavcodec mpeg4) so I guess this is a different type of mpeg4 from what the PS3 can play... it's all a bit confusing and google/wikipedia are confusing me even more.

xvid on ps3

it would seem the easiest way now with the arrival of software update 2.10 on ps3 is to install the latest div x software. on your pc desktop you will have div x player/div x movies and div x convertor. drag and drop your avi files over div x convertor click convert ,then once the file is converted transfer the file onto your sd card or whatever media your using insert into ps3 and copy . hey presto this has worked with recent xvid versions of hot rod/superbad/knocked up/transformers/american gangster and halloween 2007.hope this is useful. feedback appreciated !!!! theweave29

After yesterdays 2.10 firmware update you can watch divx, xvid and wmv files.
You can also store them on the hard drive.

So for example go to joox.net on yer ps3 web browser
pick a film, tv episode- whatever you choose it will come up application not supported- but there will be a download tag, click on this and save the file to the ps3s hard drive!
It takes for me about 15 mins on avaerage to download a film in divx at
700ish mbs from joox- and on my hd telly some of the films dont look to far away from dvd quality.
Another place is Stage6 · Upload Video Clips. Share, Watch, Download Videos

altho from this site theres a wee bit of footering aboot to be done, here is a guide i ripped off of ps3fanboy site:-

Stage6 is widely known amongst DivX fans as one of the best places to get high quality streaming DivX video. Unfortunately, the site isn't compatible with the PS3 ... or is it?

It is, so long as you're willing to fiddle around with the PS3's web browser a bit. Go to a Stage6 video you're interested in. For example, we've chosen the PS3's recent Universe of Entertainment ad. Edit the URL in your PS3 browser by pressing START.

URL displayed by browser:
Stage6 · PS3 · PLAYSTATION®3 - Universe of Entertainment - Video and Download

To download this DivX file to your DivX-enabled PS3, you're going to have to edit the video as such:

http://video.stage6.com/1827927/.divx

That's it! Press START, and your PS3 will start downloading the DivX file directly to your hard drive. You can do this with any video on Stage6. All you have to do is follow this formula:
http://video.stage6.com/VIDEO-NUMBER/.divx

Any other information is unnecessary! This only takes a few seconds, and you'll have high quality DivX files any time you wish.

Dear Santa i now need a new much bigger internal hd for my ps3 or will settle for an external one!

Also on another note with the new 2.10 fw for ps3 you can remote play ps1 games on yer psp weather its on the ps3's hd or ps1 disc is in the drive and check out the new visualizer provided by nasa when you play your mp3's/ cds its the earth rotating likes of the google earth thingymabob!

Cant wait till tommorow- new map and DROPSHIP for warhawk!!
