Lovecraft was a pulp horror writer, back in the 1920s and 30s. Sometimes his writing style's a bit dross and clumsy, and his word choice is sometimes archaic, but his ideas and imagination were excellent.

Basically, his whole philosophy was that he was fed up of the stereotypical attitude of his time - i.e. "us humans are the most important beings in the universe". Being a sceptic, he wrote fiction reflecting his views on this, using horrible great big beasties to symbolise the fact we're probably not the most important thing in this universe. It's still fairly relevant I think.

Lovecraft influenced a lot of modern horror writers, like Stephen King. It's good stuff, but it can be a wee bit dry at times - it's nice to read it in moderation.

I couldn't get past the first chapter. I couldn't get past the fact that there were about 3 very obvious Smiths quotes 'slipped' in in the first few pages :S

I finished the Coupland book I mentioned before if anyone cares. It was very good. I would recommend!

Just need to find another book to read now! I might reread some of Christopher Brookmyres stuff

See I didn't even notice that when I read it - myself not being a massive Smiths fan being the main reason why. Although saying that, it didn't escape me that the title of the book is a title of a Smiths song!

I'm reading The Sagittarius Enigma by Jane Ridder-Patrick.

I am a fucking delinquent who finds it nearly impossible to get through books. This is the second book I've started in the past few years.

I should really give it another go. The way it was written bugged me too. It starts off really kind of imaginative and descriptive then suddenly goes all trashy 80's teens. I'll give it another chance tho.

I just finished 'Generation X' by Coupland the other day, I didn't think all that much of it to be honest, although I really did like Girlfriend in a Coma by him.

Now Brrokmyre, one of my all time favourite authors, hes brilliant!!!

I have read:
  • One Fine Day In the Middle of the Night
  • A Big Boy Did It and Ran Away(which I read i the last few days of my holiday just before I was away to get the plane back home[folks that have read the book will know what I mean])
  • The Sacred Art of Stealing
  • Not the End of the World
  • Quite Ugly One Morning

I have 'Country of the Blind' and 'Boiling a Frog' sitting here waiting to be read. Though I don't have his most recent book yet

What I really love about the books, is all the Scottish one liners he manages to slip in, that a lot of folk may not get unless they are Scottish or have a good knowledge of Scottish things. 'The Sacred Art of Stealing' is really good with all the music references too

But I love Brookmyre

I've read them all, bar his newest one. Outta the two you've not read I prefer 'Boiling A Frog', don't get me wrong 'Country of the Blind' is good, but not as good, or at least in my opinon. Although, I've only read that the once so when I read it again it might grow on me.

I love all the ones I've read, so much. I've read them loadsa times each. I kept meaning to pick up a copy of his newest one that was in fopp recently but I kept forgetting and it's gone now. I'll eventually remember to get it one day though!
