Im reading through the new Star Wars series (coz im a big geek) "Legacy of the Force" set 4 decades after the Battle of Endor in which the galaxy is in a state of Repair after the newest intergalactic war vs the Yuzzhan Vong (sado masocists that cant be affected by the force and are pretty much on a Jihad...). Many planets have left the New Republic (now called the Galactic Alliance after joining with the remenents of the Empire).
In this series Jacen Solo (one of the twins of Han and Leia) is the quintesential mac daddy Jedi dude (Luke Skywalker eat yer heart out) and he is slowly turning to the Dark Side as he sees the rebirth of a strong Sith Empire as being the only way to restore peace and order to the Galaxy... ...yeah, sounds strange, but hey its pretty fuckin cool if your a Star Wars obsessive like myself, Darth Baddass the Flatulent. |

It gets better, Star Wars fans have been asked to come up for a Sith Lord name for Jacen. Theres an official poll at starwars.com, the choices are
Darth Acheron Darth Caedus Darth Judicar Darth Paxis Darth Taral ...i dont really like them though...well, Darth Judicar is pretty good (Jacen has become the head of the GA Secret Police...kinda like KGB...hes killing terrorist suspects during interegations ioncluding innocents and Boba Fetts grand daughter...bad man...) Oh, and Ben Skywalker (the son of Luke and Mara Jade*ex Emperors Hand, aka an assassin*)is his apprentice and is completely unaware that they are both falling to the Dark Side. |

"The Selfish Gene" by Richard Dawkins. Interesting stuff, really thought-provoking.
Also helped by the fact that I'm gonna be study Evolution/The History of the Earth at Uni. Got the Blind Watchmaker to read after, and I'm gonna get the rest of his books too. |

Just finished 'Glue' by Irvine Welsh. Great read. Now onto 'Agressor' by Andy McNab. I've never read any of his books before. Utter cheese, although somewhat addictive.

Just finished Kicking Off: why hooliganism and racism are killing football. It was pretty rubbish. He included his brief for a short story involving NASA intercepting communications. Its obvious he meant the NSA but doesn't help you put faith in his research. Currently reading Red Web. Its about KGB turning pretty much all the CIA and MI6 agents in Eastern Europe, is interesting so far. That's the books for the bus, at home I'm going through Francis Wheen: Karl Marx which is supposed to be excellent and after that it will be Richard Dawkins: Ancesters Tale, both of which are too large to practically cart around on the bus. |

I'm reading Survivor by Chuck Palahnuik (sp?)
It is really annoying just now, I'm only 3 or 4 chapters in and I'm bored already. The last chuck book I read was haunted and although that was cool because the story was laid out differntly to most novels, the thing i didnt like about that was his style. I know everyone bigs him up and whatnot but after 4 books in exactly the same style I'm starting to think that his stuff isn't for me. It's the fact that all his characters are weird, for starters. They are all freaks. They all know extensive, in debth detail into the silliest of things to make the characters seem more interesting. For example, in fight club he knows all about chemicals and making soap and bombs and the like. In survivor, he knows all about correct eating etiquette for everything and all about flowers. Yeah, there are reasons for all this knowledge in the characters, but I get the feeling that all his lead characters are actually the same person but with differnt name and backgrounds to suit different stories. His style of writing is also annoying. The way he continually repeats lines and makes sections of his writing almost lyrical in form is really getting to me. I can hardly read it seriously any more witjout noticing these things. I know these things are what people like about his books but it's turning me off completely. I think I'll go back to terry pratchett! I'm listening to the audio book of wintersmith, his newest discworld novel. i'm on the last cd (4 of 4) and it's bloody brilliant! |
