It's a Jazz Thing

did anyone see this programme on channel 4 about 7 tonight presented by branford marsalis? it was really great, all about the underground jazz scenes of certain cities. it looked at new york, chicago, paris, norway, london and maybe a couple of other places i cant remember. some really fucked up avant-garde free jazz which was pretty ace, and some nicer stuff too. it mostly centred around modern jazz and how it has been incorporated into different styles of music i.e. hiphop, drum n bass and the like.
they showed some footage and talked to this brilliant jazz trio i saw at the rep earlier this year during the jazz festival, the esbjorn svensson trio
a bit of it focused on the scene surrounding new york's the knitting factory venue too which was really interesting. they mentioned john zorn but sadly didnt show anything about him. the other guys were totally cool, david ware (i think) and bill frisell being the only ones i remember.
also check out the bad plus who, aswell as having some excellent original material, do really bizarre covers of songs by popular artists. the pixies, nirvana, black sabbath and abba being some of them.
