the people who run mtv dont care about music at all, so many decent bands with potential have been destroyed by the hype mtv creates for them, which they then cant live up to because all they are is a good band, not part of some musical revolution that doesnt even exist. it aims to make all music disposable so it can throw it out when its done with it, then be "the cutting edge of cool" again.
i dont have a problem with a band being on mtv, i just feel sorry for a lot of them, you cant judge anyone by one song.
you dont need a guy in a suit to tell you what bands to listen to, or what bands to stop listening to for that matter.
people should care more about whats going on around them rather than whats the latest hip thing in america.

mtv is excellent for avoiding adverts. watch the pretty pictures, ignore the music and all is well. i'd certainly rather watch christina aguilera girating for 4 minutes than have some prick in a toupe try to sell me insurance via a talking potato.

and anyway, mtv is a company. it wouldn't really make good business sense to play round-the-clock black metal classics, would it? how successful would their "oi" week be? just be happy they show a lot of semi naked people to fill in the time between proper programmes

I think the point is though, that MTV is in a position where it SHOULD be showing good music, rather than the preformatted meaningless tripe that they show nowadays. Looking at pretty pictures is all well and good, but wouldn't you rather listen to some good music instead?

Cue someone telling me to listen to my cd collection instead. That's NOT the poing so don't fucking start.

oh come on?

"Punk/underground bands have nothing to do with being elitist."

a large percentage of punk and metal fans are *extremely* elitist. its just silly to say that they aren't.

also, there are two sides to *every* argument. mtv is a great source of entertanment for many, so its a good thing for them. it's responsible for some good things (beavis and butthead, haha) and constant promotion of 'smells like teen spirit' spring to mind. the musical content is pretty much rubbish now, but so are most mainstream radio stations 90% of the time. you cant deny the power of pop music culture, and its not nessecarily (sp?) a bad thing.

more 'good' (i.e. underground) music would be on mtv if it was more popular. but then it wouldn't be underground anymore. so that would make many people who liked it when it was 'alternative' to begin to dislike it for its mass popularity. so mtv would still be playing 'pish' mainstream music. paradox or what?

mtv will never be able to break a great band with integrity, that can only be done by the corruption of a band by themselves.

but personally, yeah it sucks...

I think there can be a line between promoting good music and corrupting it. I mean MTV did it themselves in the early 90s, that's how they made their name. The problem is the formatting I think. Showing the same video three times in an hour then having the presenters jack off all over it is not the way to retain integrity. I reckon Zane from MTV2 is pretty cool for that. He doesn't just jump up and shout about how the latest The band are the saviours of rock and roll or whatever. On occasion he actually insults a band, which I reckon is pretty cool of him. You can showcase new music without oversaturating it. Objectivity is all that's needed, and less marketing.

So in conclusion, music television could be a very good thing for music, but at the moment it's shit.

The Donnas? I can't decide if I like them or not.

On the one hand, they are very very hot, and their new stuff is cool in a Guns And Roses Lite fashion.

On the other hand, I remember when the donnas were these fat wee munters who wrote shite music and couldn't play their instruments. (they stole my gimmick)

However, in my opinion, because there is no way of stopping this from happening, certain people go the next step, and decide to hate every band that is on mainstream TV, because if they do that, then people who see these bands on TV wont be liking the same bands...

For example, an acquaintance of mine was a massive fan of the exploited - then they were on P-Rock, and wham! suddenly their pish!?

This doesnt go for everyone, but it is undoubtable that when it comes to music breaking into the mainstream, especially 'punk' music, it is seen as a negative thing not because they are 'going against what they stand for', but because people are too greedy to share 'their' music... it all comes down to elitism in the end. One group will always think they are better than another, at least some groups admit they feel this way, but others choose to hide behind a mask - claiming that music should be for everyone and should not be exploited, when in fact, they are acting with complete hypocrasy.

I have no problems with people who stand up to strong beliefs, but when they completely go against themselves - which so many do - its just petty.

Why should they get off the air? if it bothers you - dont listen to it. If you hate it so much, dont even talk about it...

thats pretty much a spot on analysis from what i have gathered about the entire alternate scene. Nice one knee-cow, couldnt have put it better myself. got to admit though im guilty of this train of thought.
