Underground??

When someone says a bands "underground", wot does that mean??

for example, once Jeff and Scott(from paperbitch) were arguing about Bikini Kill(I think) and Iron Madian.

Scott: " dude, omg, Bikina Kill are like, sooooo much better than Iron Madien!!!!1"

Jeff: " well how come Iron Madien have millions of fans and bikini kill have about 10"

Scott: " Thats because their underground"

i dont understand this, it just seems to me like a stupid word for bands who are to crap to ever get really famous use to make them sound cooler.

wot does it really mean?

underground - unsigned or not commercial, or not played on the radio every 10mins etc etc etc. Or if a band has still to break out they are...

like you have got your band that everyone (general public) has heard of and recognizes
then you have your underground band who may have loadsa fans within their scene but people from other scenes may not have a clue who they are

Yeah but that's complete bollocks when you consider that quite often talent is inversely proportional to popularity. I mean Britney Spears is a lot more popular than Devin Townsend for example, but Devin Townsend is actually very talented, whereas Britney can just sing other peoples music. (and very basic music at that)

Most people aren't very intelligent with regards to the music they listen to, probably because most people aren't very intelligent. If they were, then I doubt The Sun would be so popular.

I am willing to bet none - they are all 'underground' bands. So are Sonic Youth.

For you to dub anything that isn't featured on Radio One everyday or in the Sun week in week out as 'pish' is fucking ignorant at best.

If I were to come along and say that all 'rap' was 'shite' without having a clue about the music I would be laughed off the board. (I wouldn't do that anyway, cos I like a load of rap stuff)

Wondah Vocal, like it or not YOUR music is 'underground' - no-one has heard of you and you aren't troubling the charts (or even A&R men) - does that mean you are 'pish'??
