Is there no way that we can set up an online radio station? I'm kinda tired to look into it tonight but is that a viable idea? Anyone tried anything similar?

You need to have a radio show to put the music on first.

And has anyone tried that other Dundee station? Wave 102 i think.

When I went to Abertay, there was talk about doing an online radio station there. If you're a student there, you should ask about it.

I have though about this for a while now and I think this is being tackled in the wrong way. Let's be honest that majority of demo stuff in Dundee is just not interesting or well produced to get mr generic Tay Listener to tune in and then buy some sidey windows etc... To me you either have a niche market with few listeners (not popular with the station) or commercial rubbish that people can listen to in work without much brain power(not popular to the band scene).
But is there a middle ground?
Would a better approach to get these stations to produce a show somewhere in between. Good commercial indie music segway’ed with some of the better local / unsigned talent. A new presenter that’s talents are more centered towards good music rather than a middle of the road accent. That way you will not loose the chart listeners but get a platform for good local music.
You have to remember that forming a band does not give you a divine right to airplay.
Lots of other commercial stations do this in the evening. XFM in London a very notable one.
To paraphrase Matthew Bannister of Radio 1 "During the day for rating, credibility in the evening"
I don’t know who is co-ordinating these efforts but now is the time to ramp up. Mainstream Indie (if that is not oxymoronic) will take over local radio in the same way commercial dance did 7 years ago.
You just need to cite XFM’s recent takeover of beat 106 as a perfect example of this.
It has been happening in London, Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham for a couple of years now, to cite just a few.
I my humble opinion a two hour show on either Tay or Wave102 on a Sunday evening would be ideal.
Playing the likes of Snow Patrol, Libs, Arctic Monkeys et al with some older stuff like stones, faces, stevie wonder whatever sounds good really and will keep people from switching off.
Then you can drop in gig guides, tracks, live sets from local talent; whatever you want really. Also I think it needs to be not so insular towards local music; demo’s should be welcome from all over.
That’s my two pence worth anyway!!!

i kinda agree with that use local bands as fillers inbetween well known bands and gently introduce new talent that way. if people are interested in shows purely about new talent they go to radio 1 not a local station.

i remember a state of affairs song got played when we were all only 15 years old it was fantastic the song on the other hand...hehe im all for trying to get local stuff back on the radio what we should do is get all bands interested to hand a c.d into 1 person and then when there are lots of c.ds we should post them in one package with a big letter.
