Let's get UGS Bands on local radio
DO YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR LOCAL MUSIC SCENE?
There are 168 hours in a week. That's 167 hours for the local Dundee radio station Tay FM to play the top40 and sell advertising. Recently their 1 hour show "The Weekenders" was cancelled. It was the only hour out of 168 where new independent music and unsigned demos could be heard. Tay FM say they can't justify the slump in ratings after the chart show (30,000 to 2,000). "I believe that catering for that 2000, and showing a commitment to new music is crucial for a local radio station and that one hour our of 168 is a tiny gesture of support - you are quite right that the local music community is being let down." - Emily Dewhurst, Dundee City Council. This policy of killing off shows on local radio that play independent music has already happened in ABERDEEN (NorthSound) and EDINBURGH (Forth FM). Let's get it back on air. Let's get Allergo, Thee Moths, The A Forest, Spyamp, Laeto, Kaddish, Engage, A Written Apology, and any other underground band from our scene on there. Let's get comprehensive gig listings and info announced on it. Let's get as many demos in an hour as we can get on the radio. Let's make it relevent and get UNDERGROUNDSCENE.CO.UK involved. Let's get local schools and companies involved, such as Stage2000, Seagate Studios, The Courier, Evening Telegraph, Beatgenerator, Dundee University Bands Society, SoundControl, FOPP, Rainbow Music, Grouchos, Westport Bar, Reading Rooms, Drouthy Neebors. I'd rather have a 1 hr programme of 100% independent music on local radio than give it up. Emily believes that the show CAN BE BROUGHT BACK INTO THE SCHEDULE if enough people voice their support. Or if you'd rather it was a brand new show and played 30mins of demos / unsigned stuff along with other independent music then say so! THE PRINCIPLE HERE IS WE CAN GET INDEPENDENT MUSIC BACK ON TAY FM IF WE MAKE OURSELVES HEARD, AND I BELIEVE THATS WORTH DOING RATHER THAN HAVING NONE AT ALL. TELL THEM WE WANT IT BACK. www.tayfm.co.uk/contactus.asp Graeme.Waggott@tayfm.co.uk ali@tayfm.co.uk emily.dewhurst@dundeecity.gov.uk Last edited by Lindsay : 3rd November 2004 at 05:11 PM. |

online petitions are a waste of time
We'll get results a lot faster if people email those addresses
and/or phone Tay FM 01382 200 800 and say you'd like the show put back on. |

can you cut down the font size as it really isnt necessary and borks the board
also I dont think I need to contact the Abertay Roc Soc to say that we will fully support this, add name to list, will go circulate this to the mailing list too... Last edited by AlanG : 2nd November 2004 at 05:26 PM. |

Heres the email I sent off and I also carbon copied it to studio@wave102.co.uk If Tay FM wont support the local scene maybe they will!
I was deeply upset to read that the Weekenders show has been cancelled. In Dundee this was one of the easist ways for bands to try and build a local fanbase outside of the loyal friends who come along to their every gig. If Tay FM can't dedicate one hour to local talent to try and foster Dundees own Franz Ferdinand or Snow Patrol (who used to play the Westie all the time) then why should those in the Dundee music scene support Tay FM? If Tay FM is only willing to support generic corporate dross then you will lose any right to then crow of their successes should any local bands "make it". As a Tayside based radio station you should be doing anything you can to foster talent in the local area, I presume that is why you hire out your rehearsal studios and have a gig guide on your website to why stop there? I urge you to reverse your decision and choose to actively support local music Alan Graham Chair of Roc Soc - Abertays local rock music society |

The general lack of postings / apathy on this issue of priniciple is quite shocking. I'd rather people posted in this thread and said - we dont care so we're not going to bother - rather than stay silent. Or is wanting to get 1 hr of unsigned music on local radio not hardcore enough for the general UGS population? Some people spend a sad amount of time arguing and spouting opinions on things which are of no consequence, so why not give us a mighty superior opinion on this?

I've never listened to it and I don't own a radio, so I don't really know what to say in the email, and to be honest I'd feel like a bit of a hypocrite. Happy? |
