Pink Floyd Sued

Quote:
Pink Floyd Kids Need Some Compensation
The children who sang the classic line "We don't need no education" on the Pink Floyd hit Another Brick In the Wall are suing the band. They 23 youngsters were never paid for contributing to the song. Now they want thousands of pounds in broadcasting rights cash.

The smash-hit single gave Pink Floyd a number one in 1979 and was featured on The Wall, one of the biggest-selling albums of all time.

One of the singers, Peter Thorpe, 38, said: "'We were just taken to the studios and it was great fun.

"I didn't realise royalties were owed. I'm very glad to be in a position to claim them."

Teacher Alun Renshaw secretly ferried the children from Islington Green School in north London into the studio without telling head teacher Margaret Maden.

She later banned the youngsters from appearing on Top of the Pops.

The school was given £1,000 and a platinum disc by the band as a thank you.
Should they be happy with what they got to experience?
And do they even deserve anything more?

They recorded a performance that has been repeated many many times. They were neither individually paid or given any royalties at the time.

Damn right they deserve some money.

This 'don't pay the singers' thing seems to be fairly common with Pink Floyd - the girl who sang the wailing part on 'Great Gig In The Sky' only got about £20 at the time....

a suitable percentage of performance royalties seems to be in order, with compound interest as well could see them all pretty well off (About a boy living off royalties is a bit too far)

To be fair she did agree to that at the time, she doesn't really have a leg to stand on. And don't forget that Pink Floyd weren't that huge a band when they were recording Dark Side Of the Moon.

The kids is a more complicated situation but I believe the exchange was made with their teacher who had custody over them at that time. If the band can produce a contract with the teacher saying that they never agreed to pay him or them royalties then there is nothing the kids can do.

I think although they are entitled to it (unless it was of course agreed) they shouldn't really need to go suing the band for royalties. Most people would be made-up to get a chance like that.

Anyway some sorta deal will no doubt end up getting struck.

One more thing... why did it take 25 years for these folk to come running for their money?
