I tend to see it as either appreciating music as an art form or a simple source of entertainment. I think a lot of really popular music sells so much because its easy listening background music to just put on whenever. However, when i'm listening to something I find a bit deeper and a bit more meaningful or whatever I tend so see it more as a piece of art. Same goes for films.

We were obviously joking. To get back on topic, Bono is a c*nt. I read something somewhere that made him out to be less than the charity-donating-pope-visiting saint that he is made out to be. I'll have a look for it, but to be honest, I can't be arsed. |

I remember a time when you were attracted to a 15 year old girl Dave. Didn't you decide it would be immoral to do anything about it? Shouldn't R Kelly have acted in a similar manner? Anyways, I was just making the point that its a bit strange that people like J-Lo etc. don't care that R Kelly's a convicted sex offender when other celebrities in the same position get ostracized by their peers. On a side note, when I typed paedophile into dictionary.com, as well as the definition, it came up with a link saying "Get the most popular sites for paedophile." No thanks. |

this is a fundamental thing, people like a specific noise because of circumstances... family/friends influence... state of mind... age... and loads more but most importantly the media. devon no doubt had to put years of blood, sweat and tears into gigging and building a fanbase, no doubt he plays an instrument and has a band (i have no idea) and probably had to pay for his entire breakthrough himself by scrimping for demo's, fuel between gigs etc. and a fucking million other things. he's done this for aeons and he is still garnering new fans here and there with every year. girls aloud were 5 nobody's, probably ambitionless and hadn't actually thought of a career in music, but 2 months after applying to an ad they had a number 1 single. in those 2 months they had already made steven cowell and the pop idol chairmen millions and multi hundreds of millions in revenue from being across 3 channels, 3 times a week and being paraded for 14 odd million people to fone in at £1 a time and text at 50p a time. "get girls aloud figures with your bigmack", "chance to see girls aloud live inside this pepsi can" etc. i hope people get the jist. some people work their ass off and gain a handful of new fans every day, but these fuckups get forced into a life of parties and luxury lifestyles but have a novelty that wavers after their first single and quickly fade away, and by this time they are probably richer and more well known than devon townshend could ever hope to be. and yeah, we think mocking them "girls aloud, mingers lol" solves our probs, but it doesn't, they are known to millions as "fine wee talented lassies". we're still a far way from being ruled by the governement, and an equilibrium/1984 kinda future. but we are already ruled by the media, and people on ugs are the rebels in a way, but someday everyone on the planet will love the same band, will all eat the same food and will all take the same pills. |

Agreed. As different music is wrote for different people you shouldn't call it shite cos you don't like it. Some people need to learn to accept others taste and not insult them for it (although a light hearted piss take is always gd
). If you don't like a westlife you don't like a westlife but the music wasn't written for you, it was written for young girls who like that sorta stuff. If they really like the songs then kudos to the folks that wrote it!However more in the context fo the thread... it is frustrating seeing someone who isn't particularly talented making the big time while some real quality will never shine but I guess thats life. Another thing that kinda bugs me about the music industry, especially in pop is how imagery does often seem more important than the music itself. Would Kylie still be going strong if she didn't look good in hot pants? Would have the boy bands circulating be popular if it wasn't for people in them? In many cases, no. Then again i suppose that if i were to watch a pop video i'd rather see a half dressed lass with a perfect figure but not so much talent then some brilliantly talented lass nicknamed "The Beast." Mibbe thats just the shallowness of me but i'm sure many folk will agree. WTH am i babbling on about now? Hmm i'll shut up... Oh quick note... Before someone points out i like bands like Orgy & Mortiis which have their own image, I think most of them look like fannies but i guess in a weird kinda way its kewl so meh. |
