Yesterday's Next Big Thing is Today's Fuck All
"I've been a-searching for the switches just to turn myself on"
Oh! The memories! Have been having a wee look through all my free CDs garnered throughout the years from various mags such as the NME and that and was amazed at the number of hyped bands and next big things that have just disappeared from sight completely. Check out these names: Ultrasound... Regular Fries... Tiger... Campag Velocet... Symposium... Big Leaves... Younger Younger 28's (utter shite)... The New Electrics... Rialto... Jumbo (aww. I quite liked their wacky tunes) and of course Terris. Fucking Terris! They were meant to become the biggest band that ever existed! Did they even make it through the year? Anybody else got bands they remember being hyped as the next big thing and have just dropped off the face of the earth? I'm seriously might consider trying my hand at a well researched and bittersweet article to whore around various outlets Last edited by chrono : 4th May 2005 at 07:27 PM. |

"Sly Alibi" by Big Leaves. What a tune! I know the free CD that was on, and there's a song called "Looking For Sparks" (i think!) by Seafruit on their which is ace too. First Rialto album has a few good tunes on it.
I would add more to your list, but i've forgotten more than i'll remember! |

*Listening to Seafruit now*
You know, it's a shame. there's no reason why some of these bands couldn't have been as big as the current crop we've got in the charts. I guess they were just unfortunate enough to come around a few years too early. I hope they're all ok! ![]() |

Capitol K is good too. I bought an album of his (Island Row, it has a great song on it called Pillows) a couple of years later, but sold it when i was really skint
![]() The Ultrasound album was actually pretty good, just totally pompous and overblown! I can add a name to the list! Thirteen:13. They toured with My Vitriol & JJ72, released 4 singles and then got dropped before the album. One of them was previously (and i think still is) in Graham Coxon's touring band. We should compile a list of forgotten support bands or bands you only ever heard a couple of singles by then they disappeared. BTW: Midget don't count in any of this at all, as they still live on in Dave and I's hearts! |

Oh, the Seafruit album limped out on another label. It was ok, but not as good as i'd always hoped. And it had an awful sleeve!
Terris did a joint headline tour with Coldplay when they released Brothers & Sisters on Fierce Panda. I remember buying that single and thinking they'd maybe scrape the top 40 one day if they were lucky, then probably disappear like all the bands we're discussing now. How wrong i was demonstrates why i'm not a betting man! Do you remember Bellatrix? I think they were on that tour too, if not i'm sure they toured with Coldplay very early on. Silverlight & Jedi Wannabe were great singles. The Fierce Panda discography reads like a roll call of great never-were's! |

Yeah Bellatrix is on this album too. How bout Earl Brutus!
Was trying to find out about Jumbo online and found this http://www.noripcord.co.uk/7.html. I didn't even know they HAD the internet that long ago! Ended up buying the Jumbo album on amazon. They've got some used copies for under £2 but I bought a new one for about a fiver so they hopefully get some pennies! |

Damn! I'm sure there's a band that i really started to like, can't remember if it was Herameka Hi-Fi, but they sounded a bt like Samurai Seven i think (this is straying from the next big thing topic!)
Man, i guess if i'm feeling REALLY nostalgic, I've still got just about ALL my NMEs dating from about 1995 or something and ending in two thousand and something. just in case i need them. |
