Attention All Bands And Music Lovers In The Dundee Area
Andy Garibaldi of the locally based website "Dead Earnest" is currently attempting to kick start awareness of the local music scene in press and radio, hoping to build on the good work already ongoing in "The Evening Telegraph" (with their GRAPEVINE column every Wednesday)by STEVEN BELL and the sterling work of ALAN WILSON in "The Courier" (with the ROCKTALK section every Thursday) Apart from these, there seem very few opportunities for local bands to publicise their gigs or have their music reach a wider audience on a local level.
The internet is great for making new fans all over the world but not so good at filling your local boozer on a rainy Thursday night. The only site that seems useful in this respect (apart from "DEAD EARNEST") would be "THE UNDERGROUND SCENE" Radio seems like the weakest link at the moment since the demise of Radio Tay's "WEEKENDER" programme and even that show seemed unwilling to give local bands a real showcase for their music. Andy Garibaldi seems to think he could do the job on radio and we would like to see him have the opportunity to try. He is quite passionate about the local music scene and is enthusiastic about ALL MUSICAL STYLES and may be the voice we need to help encourage those locals out on a Thursday night...so click on the links page on our site at www.officialsaz.com |

Why is Andy not on the site talking about this instead of getting you to come on here and do it for him?
It reminds me of the official Dundee City website refusing to give to a link exchange with us despite them having the best interests of Dundee at heart... makes you wonder. Dont get me wrong, all the best to him, but if he's serious about it get him to come on the site and explain his intentions so that people can actually see he really is sincere. I've never met the guy so i cant comment on what he's like, but doing that would be a start but nothing annoys me more than someone claiming to be doing something to benefit the music scene but then getting someone else to do the talking for him.So come on Andy, there is plenty of people on this site that would be willing to give you a hand if you need it.

a one sheet is a a4 sheet you get from record companies with stuff they want you to review.
they name drop, hype and make exagerated claims about the band and are complete waffle.

ah ok, that makes sense. lol. Cheers. Yeah it is indeed, i always prefer to hear or read something written by the person you are meant to be communicating with... otherwise it just feels artificial.

Andy G's site is HERE.
You can contact him via email there kj - perhaps you should drop him a link. I have never met Andy but had heard of him so emailed him regarding an upcoming gig of ours, asking if he would fancy coming along and doing a review. He sent me a message back and was good enough to turn up at the gig and post a review online shortly after. I doub't you'll have any trouble getting a response from him. |

Please note that Andy Garibaldi did not ask us to start this thread, but we felt that anyone willing to approach radio stations with the idea of a half hour programme consisting soley of local demos was and is worthy of everybody's attention and support. He is currently doing lots of gig reviews and sells local bands demo's on his site. He also has lots of contacts in the music industry and is hoping to put Dundee in the spotlight on a more international level.
We would also like to add that in our experience Andy is one of the most sincere people in Dundee with regards to the music scene. I have emailed Andy and told him that this thread has been started. ![]() |

Andy is a great guy who seems well into his music. He has been along at a couple of gigs we have played and done a good review of us despite having never met him before it.
He seems to have good connections and iv no doubt he would be willing to help out any band no matter what style of music they play. Heres a review he did of us- RISING SIGNS + The Law Going back over a year now, when I was asked to check out some other band (who turned out to be a waste of time), it was this band, playing support on the night, that drew me to what turned out to be a wealth of local musical talent in Dundee, this lot included. On that night, I remember being extremely impressed by their music but felt that the vocalist was all wrong for the band, even though the compositions appeared to be a selection of quality originals. As things turned out, I got into contact with the band and kept in touch. A short time ago, they changed vocalist, and this was to be the debut of the new line-up - would things have improved? The answer turned out to be a resounding "yes". This band is a quintet in the tradition of rhythm section, lead and rhythm guitarists and vocalist. Right from the start of the set the twin guitars set the scene as a combination of chiming guitars and riffing began the first number, very soon joined by bass then drums and finally the vocals - in one brief minute, letting you know that this band is back and hot. The things you immeditely think of when hearing the band are the almost Stone Roses approach to ther guitar work, and even, to a degree, to the drums too, while the bass has that full, pounding sound so reminiscent of New Order, only here beneath an overtly indie guitar band, the whole "Manchestr - 80's" feel present as an influence, although in no way copyist. Vocally, the new guy is good - extremely good - with an individual voice, in tune, not hoollering, quite powerful, he almost sounded at times like he was doing his own harmonies as the strength of the vocal came into play. Fuelled by the guitars, the rolling indie passion of the opening track really starts things off to a tee. Track two is similar in pace and strength only this time more individual, the guitars work now a duel cauldron of entwining riffs that move together or weave in and out of each other, with a composition that's quite intense but soars to great height, again, the vocalist flying along on top. After this the dynamics of the set was toned down a notch as a couple of slower, more "ballad"-like tracks came into play, not exactly immediately something you'd remember on first hearing in a live settting like this, but decidedly quality songs. Throughout, the band played cohesively and you couldn't help get the feeling that once this band really sparks into life, there will be a bright future awaiting. Sadly the set was stopped thanks to an incident in the crowd and this was all we got to hear of them but it was enough to be able to state quite categorically that this is a now potentially great band, with some superb guitars work and general performance all round - and a vocalist that fits, at last. Hopefully, more to come...... |
