Dundee's Local scene?

i dont know 100% myself, and i know i have made mistakes in my past myself, but have a read and tell me where this is wrong

1. promotors that put on touring bands, dont find out whether they are ok with sharing backline
(This happens alot to bands which is ashame, and can cause problems)

2. get arsey when they aren't
(would you like your equipment ruined?)

3. dont find said band a place to stay
(this will piss them off alot, if you cant get them a place..find someone who can or pay them extra and make sure they know before hand)

4. dont feed the band
(your an idiot if you dont , try be fair, if they have traveled a stupid ammount of miles spend £2-3 on them for even stovies)

5. spend so much money on a 'rider' for the band that they don't have any money to pay them, when they could have just made a pot of chilli for 2 quid out of tescos

6. promotors who only promote local bands as a wee earner
( this one fucks me off most, and i must admit when younger i thought this was okay. pay to play also fucks me off alot)

7. reviewers should review touring band gigs and the local support, because simply reviewing local bands is not going to get them recognised

8. bands get payed what was agreed, if its too much, negotiate before the gig, or don't put it on

9. if you don't make enough on the door, it comes out your own pocket

now i also understand ..crowd in Dundee is a complete joke kids saying yeah i love the band..then dont show, well try explain to band sort something out always try pay them as much as you physically can! , i know i've had to and many others have ask : Claymore (sabunation) Paul_engage and of course Gav_revolt.

10. bands don't wanna stay in party houses
(alot of bands are soo tired , they just want to rest. give them the chance, if they want to party i'm sure they would say! )

Please leave more replys with your views.

Pay to play annoys me. It costs a fortune to play in the doghouse etc these days

no when i say pay to play ..i mean promoters who feel it's ok for bands to play for free and not get paid (ok this happens alot) or promoters who make bands sell tickets to play

and making a tidy sum off the door is bad also, maybe pay the bands?

Its been a wee while since we've played there and organised it ourselves, usually we're asked to go on a gig there thats done by promoter or as support. We were told it costs £150 to play there now. Is that shite? most likely. haha

It definately would be nice to get paid for playing sometimes

We have rarely used a promoter,if a band is coming from say Glasgow to play with us etc its cause we invited them and we will promote and run it ourselfs.

That way we have all the equipment sorted already.

We just book the venues and run the night ourselfs charging at the door what we think is fair to cover costs etc.

The venues are happy enough cause we bring a crowd and they can make a bit off the bar.

£150, thats pretty reasonable if you ask me, you're getting the hire of an excellent PA, an engineer as well as the hire of the room for that.

does not paying bands seem right to you?

if the glasgow band want £50 ..and you make £100 ,give them even £70 then take £30 for yourself as it may have cost that for posters etc.

i think this was more aimed at people promoting gigs for touring bands, glasgow/ edinburgh bands can be considered local bands, unless they are on tour.

We got to support a touring band from America last year. Fucking shambles. We ended up supplying most equipment for all bands and setting stage up ourselves and i stupidly ended up out of pocket and it wasnt even me organising it. Due to the poor organisation we got to play about 15 mins. Got to watch some of these gigs and who's promoting them

To be honest the money isnt a big deal for us at all,as long as we arent out of a pocket then we are happy to play to people that have bothered wanting to come and see us.

We played a gig in the Westie wich we had put on ourselfs and i organised 2 support bands.

In the end we ended up giving the 2 support bands £100 each and walking away with around £200 ourselfs after paying the PA.(may have been you Robin )

Anyway my point is fuck the promoters off and take matters into your own hands then that way theres no danger of being shafted
