Has myspace killed local music forums?
Back a few years ago when i was actively playing in a terrible band i regularly visited many music forums that were locally based and bursting with bands and people putting on gigs doing gig swaps etc all the time it was how we got most of our gigs, now when i visit some of them they are totally dead and most bands seem to have ditched any sort of website for a solitary myspace page, once on myspace it just seems as most peoples friends are full of random folk and people who arent even fans or friends. Maybe im feeling old or maybe im right but i know when im on myspace i am useless at communicating with others through it unlike using forums and other such mediums.
Anyway my point is do you think myspace is slowly killing of forums like these? |

in a way I think your right, a few years back I would check out a bands website or something but now I dont usually tend to bother and go onto their myspace pages. My band ditched our website now aswell because we didnt really see the point in a website because myspace had everything we need.
im pretty certain UGS used to be much more popular aswell a few years ago! |

I think its also partly to do with me being a bit out of touch, but i still find myspace very anonymous and find people will add me for no specific reason. Maybe i havent found the part of myspace where i can actually discuss things like a forum or maybe im just old fashioned!

myspace hasn't just killed local music forums, as you say. it's also responsible for the demise of almost everything else. everyone just sits in front of computers every night telling blatant lies to people on their "friends" list (who they'd never actually be friends with in real life) about how *HAWT* they look in their photos, or spending hours declining friend requests from shockingly awful bands.

I actually don't like myspace all that much. It took me a long time before i gave UGS an official presence on myspace partly because of the whole self-infatuated people that seem to use it. In saying that though if you look around you do find genuine people that use it and eventually you form a small network which you can get a lot out of but in terms of killing of local music forums it definately has had an impact and the stats on UGS show it.
But this also has a knock on effect in that it makes myself and those other people who run similar websites find ways of making it different so in the end I suppose it pushes for progress. At the end of the day people know where to come if they want reliable and trustworthy information. When you are on myspace it takes a lot longer to get to know people due to the communication methods and from personal experience leaving comments isn't the easiest thing to do with MySpace. You also have to ask yourself, with all that money they are making why does the site suck so badly and where is that money going?

haha! the worst thing myspace has done is turned a bunch of clearly heavily bullied teens into a "lewk at ma nu pics lolzers or zordoiuf lol lol lol!¬!!zers. or made people do disturbing things with the english language like spell things with a K instead of a C. |

I blame myspace for the holocaust. I thought the band myspace thing was a good idea for about 10 minutes but all it's really done is take all the joy away from discovering new music. I remember the good ol' days, staggering home gigs eagerly anticipating the cdr you got from the band you just saw. Myspace removes all that magic as you can hear every band before going to a gig, which in my opinion is a bad thing, i like to be surprised. Also, there's so much shit to wade through it's not even worth it.

But if you go back a few years to before MySpace, and go back a few years again, you're in pre-internet times, where you didn't even have local music forums.
Its an ever changing world, and hey we all live in the same world baby, and it a bit Arab Strap |

I only tolerate myspace for the sharing music aspect of it, but compared to ugs, myspace has done fuck all for me. If it wasn't for ugs I doubt that Vulsellum as it stands would be in existence now, so I really appreciate this forum and find it so much more useful than myspace. I hope more people will return here and get bored of the mundane shite on myspace, and use it for what it's best for imo, listening to music and promoting gigs to people outwith ugs. Apart from that, ugs rules

Ive got kinda mixed feelings. If i need gig info i still always use UGS, its what ive always used to find out about gigs etc and i dare say i'll always use it. But i can understand why so many bands are on myspace, since it basically provides an easy alternative to a website. You cant assume that every band has the knowledge to set up a great website, and for said bands myspace is a good option. And yes, myspace is populated by an unbelievable amount of fannies but then again so is the internet in general, UGS has seen a fair amount

the best thing about myspace is finding some old friends are still alive and kicking (quite literally in one case who is now a morris dancer!)
i definetely prefer forums though. myspace is just for one on one conversations, forums are much better for discussions and arguments wherwe everyone can chip in.

i have mixed views, all the gigs i go to in the local area, i find out about though mate/ ugs, then chek ecaxt times etc. on ugs, myspace is good for keeping intouch with people you havn`t seen in ages, and intend to in the near (or distant) future. a few weeks ago i deleted 190 friends on myspace because i realised they didnt speak to me, nor me them. and since then i now have about fucking 20 more unwanted cunts!! i usually accept anyone on the pretense that they have somthing interesting to say, but they usually dont say fuck all - am i expected to speak to THEM first ?? ive probably done it a few times myself but thats genuine forgetfulness...
ugs is also good for interesting and a few random as fuck conversations when i havn`t got anything better to do. better than the lol-lil123456lolLOFLOmFg ones found on myspace. i speak to my exes on myspace aswell but thats about it apart from myspace music and a few old good friends that you only see at partys nowadays.
