lets sell our souls to make a difference
anyone up for an experiment? i am a drummer who has just left my long term band. instead of joining a new band and making half an inpact, i want to try an experiment to try and highlight how shit the music industry is just now. i know there are lots of talented musicians who log on to this site, who like me are pissed off at the lack of talent on the radio. how lucky were the kids in the 60's and 70's being influenced by hendrix, zeppelin, cream etc becuase these bands actually got airplay. kids might pick up a guitar these days and be able to play an arctic monkeys song in 2 minutes. it's not exactly mind expanding.
it also pisses me off how bands seem to follow a formula in order to "make it" these days - nothing to do with talent. as long as they have the bassline/ haircut/ sing along chorus/ and a "fuck u" atittude. my idea is to join them. essentially by forming a "fake" band. pretty much looking through the nme to see who is hot this month. make a mini e.p that would suit the current trend (but make it catchier). really easy to play too. pump it like mad on myspace. target radio like vic galloway etc, i have many contacts who can help out. get some supports at tuts etc. target glasgow. play t-break, record deal, and so on and so on. the front man doesn't necissarily have to able to sing but does have to be a bit of a crazy bastard. once the band has made a big enough impact, they announce that it was all an experiment to show how easy it is to becoming a successful musician these days without having talent. hopefully making record companies / radio etc get their heads out of their arses. there are many fake bands out there who ae following the formula to become successful.my proposal is to form the fake band who followed the formula to make an impact for the future of music. i don't know if it was a good idea to post this up on here but i am really passionate about changing the shit that is being pushed in to our ears. if u are up for it - let me know. |

why not just enjoy the music you play within your own sub culture and leave the masses to it?
for me thats the whole point of making music, to have fun and create our own community that enjoys, respects and understands each other and who will work together to build it and keep inspiring each other. there is only so far you can grow UNLESS you are hell bent on being signed/cool/nmestars/bullshit.com etc. kids getting into music these days will always hit up the big names first and think thats where it ends, "if it aint in HMV then it must`nt exist" syndrome. some of them will be happy with that and remain there for their part, others will eventually decide to dig deeper. perhaps after being to a tiny DIY show somewhere and paying attention to the words and atmosphere and thinking, "damm, there was more passion, energy and meaning behind that whole evening than there is in my entire record collection" they will then start digging and getting more involved and inspired with music. some people are just not like that tho, some people will be happy forever with pre packaged bands and throw away images because to them that is what appeals, that is all they need from music to think they are a part of it. just get the same t shirt and the same hair cut and there ya go, your in the band! you will never be able to change that because a lot of people just wont care and/or are stupid. so i think what im trying to say is - get more involved with your local music community and focus on people and bands that you relate to and try to inspire them to bring more and more people together with the same common goal. you can sit and be pissed of with the state of things all you want but making a fake band and trying to get signed to prove a point is a waste of time and effort if you ask me. IF and i stress IF you even do this and are succesfull at what point along the line are you gonna stop and think "hey, we`ve actually been signed because of this, they are offering us money and clothing deals and tours and look at all the girls and its so easy and and and and", and basically become what you say you hate? i say use your time and talents to create music that you want to, that makes you happy and that gives you inspiration. if people like it, thats a bonus and you can start from there. do whatever you want, dont listen to me, im just offering my thoughts and ideas that maybe you hadn`t thought of. "Music's power to describe, compel, renew... It's all a distant second to the offers you can't refuse. Anyone remember when we used to believe that music was a sacred place and not some fucking bank machine?" Last edited by Baz : 30th November 2006 at 02:06 PM. Reason: adding quote |
