Debate now-Botb=pants??

What the hell is battle of the bands about???
How can it be done fairly,can it be done fairly??
with all this nonsence with T-break etc do bands benifit?? or do land lords sell more booze?
one thing is for sure it strikes up a lot of bitchyness between bands etc
just what the music scene in Scotland can do without perhaps??

Yeah man weve done a battle of the bands a few times and basicly whoever brought the most mates along and generated the most money got to the next round, it was fuck all to do with the music! And it definately can create bad feeling between bands!

About 90% of the crowd was with us in Perth one time.
We still lost. Probably because they started heckling one of the other bands. Not me though.

My old band fae way in the past did a battle of the bands in the old #10's(culdesac now)
anyway it was The budweiser botb! on a saturday afternoon.
So the day afore my pops was in checking the place out and havin a pint,tapping his foot to the music,guy next to him says
"your a music fan? if so you should pop in tomorrow for the botb,I know the band who's gona win it,they are fab!"
so my old boy keeps hush and says
"howd you know who's gona win?"
The answer was "im one of the judges!"
so my pop phones me and spills the beans
Next day were all piling into the pub and the organisers call a meeting to go over the routine of the compitition.
"anyone got any questions?"
so i mention the story my dad told me!
boom a rucka starts
"thats cheating bla bla bla...."
After a calm down and restasurance that it wasnae a fix the show went on.
time for the big anouncement...........
Yep the said band who would win it did! the the place went ape shit,the band that were clearly the favroutes didnt win the other band agreed that the dingy band that were anounced as winners were shitaaaahhh
Then the polis turned up and me and my band sneeked away out the fire exit! lol!!!!!
Bastards !!!!!!
Another time being in the "t-break" at fattys i seen the band that got bood of stage and telt to get aff cause their shite went thru to play the talent stage at titp!
In my view i recon that the winner is already decided when the "judges" sive thru the demos that get sent in for the compy in the 1st place,its just making a bit of money having the so called heats.

I mean just look at pop shite on ITV,Simon the "british music reputation killer" dickhead knows fine well who he wants right at the start,the 20 episodes just ram it into the bairns heads these faces like free promotion for the 12 month pop puppet!
most of these shit pop acts have already sold their singles before they are released in the shops cause theyve been pumped on the tacky radio stations for a month before hand.
Gone are the days were bands made their way up the charts to #1

Its sad,no wonder we cant get any real recognition in the states,weve lost our great reportwar!

They should have a battle of the bands where the bands vote it (although they obviously can't vote for themselves)- that's the only fair way to do it

most battle of the bands ive been to have been total farces.
goldbloom once lost a school one to a sports metal covers band that the crowd hated, the judge was from the winning bands school.
milo lost at curlyl loyds because they werent from perth so wouldnt take as many friends to the final.
one of the bands that went through (the chicken in a basket indie one) made me embarresed to be in the same room as them.

It seems that any bands that do something a little bit different from the norm wont progress very far in these things.

Oh and there is one full proof way of getting through; do an Ocean Colour Scene cover

i dont think mexico deserved to win the battle of the bands at curlys, they were good but i saw at least 10 other bands who were amazing.

If you don't think we deserved to win, fair enough. Who do you think did deserve it? In all the arguments given above, there are things like

"the band who brings the most supporters will get through"

we brought between 8 and 12 people on a bus from dundee to every round and a few people from college - not much compared to the hundreds of others that were there. plus no one had even heard of us before we entered, we'd only just started playing in the area.

"bands who do something different to the norm won't progress very far in these things"

well we're a two piece band. i'd say that's pretty different to the norm.

"they should get the bands to vote for the winners"

that wouldn't work, because inevitably you'd get people voting for bands they thought would give them the least competition, not ones they thought deserved to win.

To be honest, i hate the whole concept of botb... it kinda just goes against all the reasons that we SHOULD be in it.

We got asked to enter the Curlys competition but the organizer, we had no intention of doing so.. we accpeted the invitation because we loved playin at curlys and getting regular gigs there was a lot of fun and we never had more than about 5 people with us at any heat, and we narrowly lost out in the semi finals.

Im glad Mexico won because i thought it was gonna be a perth band for sure ( even if one of them does live there), and neil's right.. noone had heard of mexico before the competition which makes thei achievments more impressive considering the calibre of the bands this year.

A lot of it also depends on the judges and on the nite.. for example we scored higher than them in our quarter final heat with them segaboy and cupid stunt, and then got knocked out by Pen 15 and Phantom Riffage who were 3rd and 4th respectively in the final.

So seein that we beat mexico in the quarter finals i know wish to crown myself king of the world.. thank you

of course everyones going to have their own opinions on who should have won, but that's going to happen no matter what happens or who wins.
