Saw quote earlier this week, something along the lines of:
"we use rock cos rock is the best live, hip hops great on cd but live it just doesnt work" wtf? Having seen the Roots and Blackalicious I can say hand on heart that that is bullshit. they were even better live than on cd. anyone else made it to a rare appearance by a hip hop band in the UK? *still funming at missing snoop96, wu97, flash99, sugarhill2k and dilated2002* |

some hip hop dont suit the live scene. i think its cos alot of it is electronic and the sound just aint the same on stage, although the old skool cats can still do their thing on the stage, Funkmaster Flex and Big Cap for one, i mean 2.

Have to say i prefer Wok to Flip Flop, but anybody who can say an entire genre doesnt work live obviously aint a fan. In fact would go as far to say that anybody can make such assumptions is a complete mong and deserves death.
Theres no accounting for taste, but if you dont like something you shouldnt be casting wild accusations around just cos you cant do it. Get down and jiggy with it whatever your thang is. Swing your Pants, get your groove on, have a pogolonathon. Dont let the neds knock you!! |

I've changed my mind in recent years. Emceeing is definately at its best when performed live, by those that can perform it live. When they pull it off, its amazing to watch.
i wish i could catch more urban gigs but i just canne seem to go to one without it being cancelled ![]()

man thats hypocritical! having seen the prophets live (it was the only way i was gonna see avenged sevenfold)i can honestly say that they don't really pull of that great a live set.
im all for hip hop.....so long as it's different and dosn't sound similar to everything else out there. Take the beasties...class act why? because they've done it all and still sound good. eminiem...why? the guy has good lyrics. But everything else is just so fucking plastic right now, right down to there videos that all look the same. What it sounds to me like is from the prophets point of veiwthat if hip hop was better live...they'd be doing it.......trendie assholes! Last edited by Wee_midden : 21st September 2004 at 09:27 AM. |

anyhooos, i think that quote was probably from them being asked why Jamie now does mainly keyboards & vocals rather than the decks that he used on the first album. In their opinion they didn't think it sounded that good live so they decided to stick to mainly rock sounding influences. that's just me guessing but I think that is what it was about....but then again I could be wrong |

i agree that its bullshit, hiphop can be amazing live, but ive also had experiences where it hasnt quite worked due to the venue not being right at all. (i.e. de la soul at glasto on the pyramid stage) although buck 65 at t in the park in a really small tent was one of the best hiphop gig ive ever seen. ive always wanted to see blackalicious and the roots (even more so, just to see ¿uestlove play live) but missed it by not really knowing their music, therefore not taking the chance at a festival. we went to see blackalicious at glasto 2003 but the times were all fucked up so we either missed them or they werent on til much later. bummer. ps. lostprophets suck live |
