Fuckin sellout cunts. i stil love them cos they're a great band but they're going against eveything they said they believed in. i hate when bands do this and like freto said, they're loaded anyway so i fail to see why they need "additional support".

It would be interesting to hear what personal circumstances would be behind a band like Rancid's decision to make a move like that... Maybe it is just money, chances are though, nobodies ever going to find out.

I know if I were in their shoes, and there was a decision to either quit the band as a career, or sign to a major, I'm sorry to dissapoint, but I'd be signing on the dotted line. ESPECIALLY considering that the band has probably been the dominating thing in their life for a significant portion of their life. It is their 'career' after all... Imagine potentially losing something like that. Imagine what alternatives you might have?

Or they could just be a bunch of money grabbing cunts *shrugs*

It's less about gunpoint, I was think more issues like financial viability and the like. Maybe they simply weren't making enough money to carry on. And don't say anything about 'plenty of other bands do it', Rancid are simply on a different scale to 'most other bands'. Simple fact is, you don't actually know whats going on there, and it's hard to make anything but a rash judgement in light of that. I'm not defending their actions per se, just pointing out the irrationality of making judgements based on what little evidence is available.

If its any consellation, I doubt I'll be going to see them in septemnber or whenever it is

to be fair, no-one does know exactly what's going on, but at the end of the day, Rancid, who have always maintained they'll never "sell out" have aligned themselves with a major record label, and that's hypocritical, and pretty disrespectful to everyone they preached to about it. if it came down to it, I would, in all honesty, rather split up than sign for a major label.

and no-one bother telling me I would, because I know what my convictions are, and I stand by them, fucker.

All comes down to a difference in opinion, and priorities really. I do agree though, it is hypocritical, and disrespectful. However, I would, given a decent enough reason for their decision, respect it. Without this, I'd rather just sit on the fence

Isn't Epitaph part owned by a major (might even be Warners?) anyway? Also Epitaph acts more like a major than a punk label (the list price of their CDs has been criticised by various punk types). They may have some great bands but when do you ever see their CDs going cheap?

Punk bands signing to major = let down. As the major media companies develop a stanglehold on the entertainment business it beggars belief that so called "alternative" bands would give them the time of day. All hail Fugazi and Dischord. All hail No Idea, Deep Elm, Jade Tree, Equal Vision, Fat Wreck Chords etc. - for sticking to their guns
