Solo recording artists who are more famous than their original band

Ever noticed how some bands / groups disappear never to be heard of again and then one of their original members pops up out of nowhere to become more famous that their group?

Robbie Williams would be a prime example. The wierd dungaree wearing extrovert from Take That is now one of the highest paid recording artists in the world.

Who else is there?

Justin Timberlake appears to hav exploded onto the music scene where the rest of the twats in N'Sync have disappeared. 1 of them actually wanted to go into space but "couldnt afford it"...haha fucken knob!

There's tonnes, though I can only think of ones that have had semi-decent success compared to their original band or maybe just equalled them, ie. Mel C or Loise Nurding. Tho the fact these are popsters is a shitty example, it's kinda cool when it happens with rock bands. Ozzy for example, or Robert Plant.

Anyone name a great success story?

KJ you should know a few, half of NWA led to the greatest Rappers of their time, Eazy, Ice Cube, Dre etc. I think this is the prime rap example since the likes of Wutang and D12 formed later from soloists. Hey, whadya know the boy likes rap - I was breast-fed De la soul

Cos i think they formed way before and they made a sort of pact thing like if one of them made it they would come back for the rest of them. Or something. Kinda like Papa Roach and Alien Ant Farm

you are right about the pact thing.

The Wu-Tang have officially split and all of em are on solo careers now, but out of them Method Man has made a bigger impact that the rest.

Dr Dre and Ice Cube from NWA. Although i dont think they can be bigger than NWA primarily due to what they stood for, although Cube fucked it all up when he left over an argument about payment money.

Sting went on to have a good solo career, but is he bigger than The Police?

Michael Jackson is probably the best example, going from the already massive Jackson 5, he went on to take the pop world by storm and dominated for a huge period.

Nelly from the St Lunatics is a more recent one...

Chris Camara (think thats how u spell it) went from Further Seems Forever who are very little known to Dashboard Confessional which is basically his solo band.

DC are quite big now and FSF still are not!
