May 3rd, 2009 Minus 8 – Slow Motion CD Reviews, Reviews | No Comments »

Slow Motion cover Slow Motion is the latest release from Robert Jan Meyer on the gorgeous Munich label Compost Records. Robert Jan Meyer aka Minus 8 the Swiss producer has been making music since the late 80’s. The culmination of years of music exploration came in the early 90’s when he launched his Minus 8 project.  Minus 8

Slow Motion is a fantastic collection of chilled pieces ranging from up-tempo house to relaxed nu-jazz sweetly accented at times with the beautiful voice of Virag (whose voice, incidentally I’ve fallen in love with). It’s come at the perfect time too, with experts warning this summer is going to be the hottest in the UK for several years I can’t think of a better album / mix to listen too while relaxing in the park. July 14th, 2008 Elaste – Volume 2 CD Reviews, Reviews | No Comments »

If you don’t know what Space Disco is, Elaste Volume 2 is a quick introduction to the sub genre. A fine catalog of golden age disco gems mixed together to produce a seamless history lesson for those new to classic European and US disco music from the 70s and 80s.

Rufus & Chaka Khan, Panoptikum and Jagg make an appearance, as does Tom Wieland (Les Gammas, Panoptikum, 7Samurai) who has created this compilation. The stand out tracks are Jagg’s Take Time, Stoer’s Don’t Stay Till Breakfast, Panoptikum’s Elaste and Rufus & Chaka Khan’s Ain’t Nobody. Read the rest of this entry »

It’s not that his music isn’t appealing, far from it in fact, it’s just I’ve never quite experienced a musical journey such as this one before. Previously categorising his own music as “European” I’d have to agree. But it’s more than that… it’s European electro-funk-hip-hop. It’s like Prince, Outkast and a bit of Orb cross bread to produce something spectacular. Sure the physical implications aren’t worth thinking about but musically, well, I don’t think at this moment in time I could put it much better.
