October 2nd, 2008 The Streets - Everything Is Borrowed CD Reviews, Reviews | No Comments »

A fourth album from Birmingham’s Mike Skinner and it seems the further he goes from the bedroom dynamics which formed his début record, the worse he sounds. Its almost as if Mike needs to have tales from “the street” to build records around, his last effort seemed to be a dig at the celebrity lifestyles and when this record starts with lyrics like “i started with nothing, and leave with nothing but love, everything else is just borrowed” you feel like its not going to have the grit of “Original Pirate Material” or even “A Grand Dont Come For Free” which was built around tales of a failing relationship. August 25th, 2008 M9 - Strange Fruit EP Reviews, Reviews | 1 Comment »

Strange Fruit

A hair-raising taster in the form of Strange Fruit to the forthcoming album 144,000 due out on the 27th of October. Strange Fruit pays particular attention to the scourge of black on black violence. It’s a 4.42 minute hard hitting social documentary and it’s one of the best to tackle the subject. But don’t think for a minute that it’s filled with preaching and clichés. The story telling is powerful and M9’s vocals are overwhelming. Read the rest of this entry »

August 13th, 2008 Immortal Technique - The 3rd World Mix, Reviews | No Comments »

Immortal Technique, also known as Felipe Corone, is an MC of Afro-Peruvian descent and grew up in Harlem, New York City. He’s also a political activist and the majority of his songs heavily feature political view points and messages.

His latest release is The Third World, which is more of a mixtape than an out and out album release, but it’s one of the hottest mixtape releases that you’ll come across this year. It also happens to be his first official release in over 5 years and one of the most eagerly anticipated ones too, and it definitely lives up to the hype. Ask anyone into hip hop if they heard the track ‘Dance with the Devil’ and you’ll see them flinch. This is the impact he has on people through verse and not many people can do that. It’s also a release that proves that there are still producers and artists out there who are not afraid to speak what is on their mind for fear of upsetting the establishment. July 23rd, 2008 Santogold. Sub Club, Glasgow. Gig, Reviews | No Comments »

With only one album out prior to this gig it was always going to be a fairly short affair, just over half an hour in fact, but it’s about quality not quantity and in my opinion that is what this gig delivered to the relatively packed Sub Club crowd. With two almost machine like dancers and DJ, Santogold (Santi White) produced a performance equally as energetic as her debut album.

Despite the fact that she was performing to a backing track she still managed to disguise this fact with her stage presence and that’s not mean feat considering her relatively small frame. Having listened to the album countless times in the studio I can safely say that the live show does the music justice in a way that a set of nasty Apple speakers could. Her fusion of heavy hip hop baselines and ska punk past seemed to appeal to a wide variety of folk given the diverse mixture of punters in the venue. Read the rest of this entry »

June 30th, 2008 Reain - The Metaphorcast CD Reviews, Reviews | No Comments »

Reain

Reain (pronounced Rain) is a British emcee hailing from West London, England and he’s just about to release his debut album entitled The Metaphorcast. As well as being a solo performer he’s also part of a Jazz band called The Mighty Jeddo… that’s all I got… he’s a hard man to track down on Google. Read the rest of this entry »

June 17th, 2008 Sepalot - Red Handed CD Reviews, Reviews | 1 Comment »

Logo and face

It’s hard to describe who Sepalot is, it’s even harder to define his musical style. I had to listen to Red Handed three times to even come close to making my mind up. It’s not that his music isn’t appealing, far from it in fact, it’s just I’ve never quite experienced a musical journey such as this one before. Previously categorising his own music as “European” I’d have to agree. But it’s more than that… it’s European electro-funk-hip-hop. It’s like Prince, Outkast and a bit of Orb cross bread to produce something spectacular. Sure the physical implications aren’t worth thinking about but musically, well, I don’t think at this moment in time I could put it much better.
