As the name suggests, the building is used mainly as a hostel for backpackers. However, in the Swamp Bar upstairs, they have an open mic night and gigs. On Friday and Saturday, the gigs put on by Baby Tiger (www.baby-tiger.net). They don't put gigs on any other nights, I think mostly not to disrupt sleeping guests.

One interesting feature about the gigs is that attendance is usually bolstered by the hostel guests (who obviously don't have to pay to get into the bar). It's one of the venues you should see to get an idea of Edinburgh's gig scene.
