Registering for the site

There are two areas to the UGS. You only need one user account to access both areas :)

How do I register to begin contributing to the wiki and the portal?

To register an account with the UGS wiki, the UGS portal / forums go to the register page. The account you register there will work for both the portal / forums and the wiki.

When registering your account be sure that your chosen username does not include spaces or underscores.

Contributing to the wiki

Firstly it should be noted that in order to begin contributing information to the UGS wiki you need to have registered a wiki account (see above) and be logged in.

How do I create a new page?

To create a new page you can use two methods.

1. You can use the search facility to the right. For example, if you want to create a page about monkeys in general you would enter 'monkey' into the search box. If a page already exists that will be displayed, if no page titled monkey exists then you will be given the option to create that page.

2. You can enter the url of the page into the address bar of the web browser. For example if you wanted to create a page about monkeys in general you would enter into the address bar the following address 'http://www.undergroundscene.co.uk/wiki/index.php/Monkey '. If that page already exists it will be show, if it doesn't an empty default page will be show and you will be given the option to begin entering content into the page.

How do I modify an existing page?

In order to modify existing pages you need to have a user account and be logged in. When you are logged in and viewing a page you will see 'edit' links at the sides of each of the pages' sections as well as an edit tab at the top. This will open a page with an edit box for that section or page and you will be able to begin modifying and/or adding information on that page or section.

How do I link to an existing page?

When you are creating or modifying a page you are able to create links to existing pages or new pages that don't exist yet. To do this highlight the text you want to convert to a link and then click the internal link button to create an internal link or the external link button to create a link to an external web page.

A wikilink or internal link links a page to another page within the wiki. These links are in the form link name, where the link name is optional. For example, Main Page becomes Main Page, and index becomes index. Links with parameters (the link name) are said to be "piped" because of the pipe symbol used ('|').

MediaWiki automatically checks if the target of a wikilink exists. If the page doesn't exist, the link leads to the editing screen, and it is assigned the class "new". Such wikilinks are nicknamed "red links" because they are colored red in the default stylesheet on a default installation of MediaWiki. Red links are useful in determining the current status of the page (created or not created), create incoming links to a future page, facilitates and incites page creation.

External links use absolute URLs to link directly to any webpage. These links have the associated CSS class "external". External links are in the form link name (resulting in link name), with the link name separated from the URL by a space. Links without link names will be numbered: becomes [1]. Links with no square brackets will be displayed in their entirety: http://www.example.org .

How do I upload an image?

To upload an image there is a link in your toolbox 'Upload file'. Click this and fill in the form that is displayed.

How do I insert an uploaded image into my page?

To insert an uploaded image into your page click the 'Embedded image' button and replace the default text with the text that represents your image... for example i have uploaded a file called monkey.jpg. That is the image i want in the page so I replace the default text 'Image:Example.jpg' with 'Image:monkey.jpg'.

How do I assign categories to my articles/images?

Category page

A category page consists of:

 • editable text
 • list of subcategories; how many there are is also displayed; if there are no subcategories the header and count are not shown.
 • list of pages in the category, excluding subcategories and images; the number of items in this list is called the number of articles; if there are none the header is shown anyway, and "There are 0 articles in this category."
 • list of images with thumbnails (how many there are is not counted); the first 20 characters of the image name are shown, with an ellipsis if that is not the full name; also the file size is shown. As opposed to the second and third section, this section does not have subheaders per letter, it has not even a header itself and visually seems to fall under the header of the previous section "Articles in category ...", even though in counting the articles, images/image pages are not considered articles).

To create a category page, you must add a colon in front of the Category tag when you set up the page-creation link, to prevent the software from thinking you merely want to add the page you are working from to the category:

:Category:Category name

Placing the above text on working page will create the link you can use to edit your category page.

The items in the lists all link to the pages concerned; in the case of the images this applies both to the image itself and to the text below it (the name of the image).

The first and second list each have a header for each first character, dispensed with if there are no entries for a header.

Your User page and User talk page

As a logged in user, you will be able to create your own user page and user talk page. When you are logged in, you will see your username displayed at the top right of the page. Click on this to get to your user page, which you can edit in the same way as any MediaWiki wiki page.

Most users write a little bit about themselves and their interests on their user page.

You also have a User talk page. You can access this by clicking on the Talk link next to your username at the top right of the page. Other people may write messages in your user talk page by editing it, and you can respond.

For more detailed information you can look at the Editors handbook which covers pretty much everything... but the basics have been outlined above.
