Indie Rock (an overview)
Indie Rock has been around for years, and is seen by different people as very different things. I will be writing an overview on the 'underground' indie rock that has spawned the huge worlwide community it has. Bands under the indie-rock umbrella can almost always be placed in other subcategories, punk, hardcore, emo, post hardcore, pop and so on, but they can all form into the same communities. Perhaps one of the most notable of such communities can be found in Washington DC, where bands such as Fugazi fronted a scene from which the famous Dischord Records has spawned in the 1980's (to document the punk scene at the time). Now being home to a huge list of bands, including Fugazi, Medications, Channels, Bluetip, Dag Nasty, Embrace etc. Other great US labels + families have also been created, including DeSoto records, Sub Pop, Jade Tree, Polyvinyl + a huge list of others.
The same has happened in the UK, although there aren't as many 'big names'. Bands of the past such as Cable and Spy vs. Spy have given way to bands such as And None Of Them Knew They Were Robots, Pylon, Dugong, Stapleton and others. Obviously there are hundreds more, all of whom deserve mentions. NJW.
